Re: UKFSN Disconnects and drop in download speed

[re: RobertoS] [link to this post]

You've certanly given me something to think about Roberto, thank you.

Until relatively recently, my maximum d/l speed was 2Mbps, only in the last year or so has it increased to 3Mbps.

Having checked my exchange BT Broadband inform me that:

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 4Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 3Mbps and 5Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 5.5Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 3Mbps and 8Mbps. Our test also indicates that your line could support an estimated ADSL 2+ Annex-M broadband upstream line speed of 1Mbps and downstream line speed of 5.5Mbps; typically the downstream speed would range between 3Mbps and 8Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 40Mbps and upstream line speed of 15.7Mbps.

I will now investigate both a new modem/router, I'm considering a TP Link 8960N or a Billion 7800N, and FTTC broadband however, I'm unsure if UKFSN will be able to offer FTTC.

You have been very helpful, thanks again for your patience and time.

Stopppppp! smile

If you are seriously considering FFTC then do not buy anything immediately. Decide that first, as you automatically get an Openreach VDSL2 modem.

If you are seriously considering staying with UKFSN then I suggest you think again tongue.

If there is a problem with your wiring it needs looking into anyway. Some problems would be fixed by the way an FTTC installation is done, others would not.

Have a read of the Ring/bell wire; High SNRM/Margin and Miscellaneous nasties pages in my Troubleshooting section.

Although I think your main problem is the router, you could very well have something there causing further issues.

Already stopped Roberto!

I looked at your very helpful webpage and found that I can get FTTC through BT Infinity with a d/l speed of 40Mbps, I'm astonished that I'm so out of touch.

I will now investigate FTTC as It appears BT can provide this, unlimited, for £5.00 per month more than I currently pay UKFSN for my current package.

I think my next step is to obtain a MAC code from UKFSN.

I must spend more time keeping myself up to date.

If you have any advice regarding FTTC providers, I would be grateful.

I now have my MAC code from UKFSN and it looks like BT Infinity could be the way ahead, unless you have any recommendations Roberto?

How did you get a MAC that quick from UKFSN? Ore did you ask Enta or it and pick it up from your UKFSN account control?

Infinity is a clear price-leader and as long as you don't intend to do P2P during "busy times" you should be fine. There are others, but I think for "Family 30" users Infinity would be hard to beat. Only drawback is the 18-momth contract.

Ah! Who is your line rental with? For Infinity it will have to be BT Retail.

I'm on IDNet at the moment but use under 9GB per month. Tossing up between Plusnet Value Fibre and the BT 40GB Infinity, as my 12 months is up.

I checked my UKFSN account control, the MAC code appeared there very quickly.

I don't use P2P at all, so that's not an issue, my line rental is with BT, so also not a problem.

BT 40GB unlimited looks like a good deal, let's hope they're decent as the 18 month contract is a tad long.

I really appreciate the advice you've given over the last couple of days, you have been a great help, thanks yet again.

Let us know how things go.

I think BT counts upload in the 40GB, but I expect you know your figures? It's cheaper than you have now.

Remember you are likely to increase your usage on FTTC! But no doubt an upgrade would be possible, maybe starting another 8 months though.

Order placed with BT and installation due 20th Feb '12.

Not sure how long I'll be able to continue using UKFSN though, any idea?

You just notify UKFSN and Enta on the day the migration completes, and you should get a refund of any paid-for time outstanding.
