Stepney Green Maintenence

[link to this post]

Nice to be with an ISP that keeps you informed.

Engineering work will be carried out in the London area between the times of 02:00 and 06:00 on the 07/06/2013 as part of BT's 21CN network upgrades. Users on the following interconnect will be affected:

STEPNEY GREEN

During this time customers will experience approximately 120 minutes of downtime. We would advise users experiencing connectivity issues after the maintenance window has closed to reboot their router before contacting the support desk.

We apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause.

That looks like the usual splitting hairs to me, not that I stated my ISP sent the message, just that it was nice to be with one where you are kept informed - In plain English, not PN.TT or BT!

Strange - email received from Plusnet at 9:13 on Monday:-
Service: Broadband
Posted: Mon, Jun 03 2013 at 09:08:29
Subject: Planned BT Network Maintenance - Week commencing 3rd June 2013

When's this work happening?
Early hours of most days this week.

What does it affect?
Broadband connectivity.

How long will it take?
Up to six hours each time.

What does the work involve?
We've received notifications from our suppliers about maintenance work that is scheduled to take place in the following areas this week. This work typically takes place between Midnight and 6am.

4th June
London Kingston, London Stepney Green, Wrexham and Falkirk

5th June
London Kingston, London Stepney Green and Newcastle Upon Tyne

6th June
London Kingston and Bristol

7th June
London Stepney Green

10th June
Sheffield

Although these are the areas we have been notified of, due to the nature of the broadband network these outages may affect customers nationwide. There are also a number of smaller exchange works most nights of the week that may cause smaller outages at individual exchanges.

Am I likely to notice the work?
Yes, there's a chance that you may be disconnected from the internet for a period of time during the maintenance window.

Is there anything else I need to know?
Any customers having problems connecting once the maintenance is complete are advised to log into their router interface and click connect.

PN must have stepped at least one thing up a gear since I was with them ... It's a start! smile

As far as I'm aware these are various copies of the notifications issued to ISPs from BT Wholesale - the same happened too when there was a recent outage at my local exchange, with informative notifications of progress hourly during the outage - with the times when the next one was expected (and duly given), and all done well within the expected resolution time too.

Well done BT, I think. (And to my ISP and the others for being able to repeat what they're told, more or less promptly. When the automated systems work.)

What I find a bit surprising is that Stepney Green seems to have been having monthly upgrades for two years now, all in association with a BT's national PoP upgrade project - I suppose that's what they mean by continuous improvement. Like Network Rail. (Mind you the network connection has been a bit dodgy for a couple of days after the latest work).

We see things not as they are, but as we are .

I have been receiving such e-mails from PlusNet for many years now so I am not sure when you left them.

Well that means it must be at least 9 years ago that you left Plusnet because they've been posting those service status messages for years. Here's an example from 2004: http://usertools.plus.net/status/archive/1092061546.htm

As usual .... WRONG! More like two years. In any case, I was not talking about PN or BT service pages that have to be chased if you remember, but emails of ALL planned work & service issues that are sent as standard with Freeola/Enta. But still, it's something else for me to be wrong about here.

You mean you can't opt out of receiving such emails?
