Longest D-side ?

[link to this post]

What's the longest approx line length (from the cab) folks have seen in service on FTTC ?

or put another way, at what length would we expect to see 15M, 10M and 5M downstream.

There was a story the other year about how some guy in Stoke Dry getting 15mbps 5km from the exchange. His cabinet is now in Lyddington.

15Mbps at 5km exceeds what ADSL2+ manages so sounds like a fairy story

VDSL2 matches ADSL2+ and ADSL as the distance increases due to the attenuation characteristics of the copper involved

Rutland have said that VDSL seems to do better than ADSL on longer lines, though they admit to not having met that many long lines. I always have half an eye on interoperability - experiences of a single DSLAM / CPE combo can be a bit skewed.

thanks.

"800m away gets 25Mbps" was one Rutland number, another customer also at 800m was getting 6M.

As in VDSL2 outperforms VDSL - yes very much the case.

Is Rutland using the same profile (is it 8c) as BT. In the past there have been faster SDSL than BT lines but they were ignoring ANFP when using baseband lines

Those numbers sound more realistic.

6Meg at 800m sounds very poor.

typo - corrected - VDSL2 better than ADSL2+ on "longer" lines.

Not sure about profiles, but they have mentioned ANFP constraints and the risk of affecting users still on BT ADSL in the same cab.

Don't shoot the messenger!

I completely agree with you, from what I've learned about copper cabling, what Rutland have done don't seem to be realistic. It's also 5KM from the exchange, and 2KM from the cab, so he's got 3KM of fibre tot he cab, and the rest copper wire... which seems a bit high for 15Mbps.

15Meg on 2km not impossible, just unlikely, i.e. if the only line and very little ADSL takeup in their cable bundle it might be possible.

ADSL2+ can do 8.1Meg at 47dB attenuation, which is around 3.5km of cable.
