FTTC less than 12Mbps so they won't install?

[link to this post]

Have just been informed by Eclispe that the reason why no-one will supply fibre broadband to my house even though my exchange is fibre enabled is because the line checker is reporting a download speed of less than 12Mb. Well 11.1Mbps to be exact.

They say that BT Infinity and there fibre products won't be installed for people who have a download speed of less than 12Mbps because that is their minimum guarenteed download speed for FTTC.

Am very disapointed frown

It doesn't help you, but it's less than 15 meg, not 12.

Phone BT and ask for : and ask for option 3 with fibre, this is for sub 15Mbps lines

Hi Adrian,

A number of ISPs, including ourselves, accept orders below 15Mbps estimates. In our case, and I am sure others, we also do this without limiting the upstream sync.

BT set the 15Mbps limit purely for marketing limits, to keep their "infinity" brand pure. Other ISPs are willing to work to lower limits - and that certainly benefits those who have abysmal speeds at present.

On the Plusnet forum is an example of someone connected, using FTTC, at over 4km from the cabinet (where the exchange is 8 miles away). The speed is only around 1Mbps (and it took some finessing), but this is a customer who couldn't keep a stable connection at all - and now sounds pretty happy.

BT want to keep infinity as "premium", but it is capable of helping *anyone* if it is allowed to.

I believe this costs more than Infinity though; it can result in an ADSL2+ connection as many posters here have found the BT phone answerers are completely ignorant of that product - often needing to contact the CEO's office, and as Aquiss say - that BT option is capped at 2Mbps upload, which is silly seeing as the download has in many cases been well over 20Mbps.
