is this ping acceptable?

[link to this post]

I have BT broadband with fibre, for the first few days the pings were great, now it has doubled. I am getting pings of around 60 when testing on speed test sites.

One of the main uses of my internet is Xbox live gaming. BT have told me 60ms is acceptable and a great ping for gaming! They have also told me interleaving has been turned off.
Here are some tests:

That is similar to what I was getting when fibre was first installed, then it shot up. I was getting better latency on regular ADSL. I am sure interleaving must have been turned on, but BT said it isn't turned on.

Maybe the line was unstable for a while.

There have been no disconnects as far as I can see from the event logs. The only disconnects are when I've reset the router and hub every couple of days.

AFAIK Whilst BT do use interleaving over VDSL2 (used for FTTC), that setting is not accessible to the ISP/under end user control. There are AFAIK simply a standard/stable/superstable series of settings.

I did have a 10ms+ ping for around 5 days -- all on first hop, starting a few days after install & then it went back to normal. Am assuming that was intentional as DLM assessed the line characteristics.

I do see my BT ping a little higher than O2 was too as in my case my exchange (nr southampton) seems to keep routing traffic to london via Birmingham -- not the most direct.. however it is very stable.

My pings to bbc are around 21ms

So if my line stays stable the DLM may reduce the interleaving and my latency may decrease?

I'm sure BT are listening to my post but this DLM stuff with no fastpath setting is the one thing that will hold me back from switching to VDSL2. I get a 5-6ms ping to bbc.co.uk with Be on fastpath. I'm not prepared to give that up until they offer more control over VDSL connections! frown

Rant aside - from what I've read about people post, yeah, if it's stable it may readjust itself.
