Fibre Router

I have a netgear dgn3500. Will this work with BT Infinity. Cant find anything on the BT site.

No, It needs a WAN ethernet port. You need what is commonly described as a "cable" router, not an ADSL router. You could probably configure it as an additional switch/ wireless extender if that's what you want, but you'll need something else to connect to the Openreach modem, which the ISP (BT in the case of Infinity) normally supplies anyway.

Thanks for that, any suggestions on a second router dont want to be just sitting with the BT issued one ?

I can vouch for the one Plusnet supplied, a Netgear WNR1000, fairly basic but it works.

another question - distance from the master socket for the openreach modem is this critical. I am upstairs its down, my current setup works fine.

There are lots of previous posts about this. The engineer can install a data extension cable of up to 30m between the master socket and the modem, in some cases the master socket has been moved but I don't know what the criteria are for this.
