BT Infinity - I'm not happy with it

[link to this post]

Following on from my post:

http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/fibre/4038909-well-...

I'm not happy with Infinity. Every so often when I look up a webpage, it feels like a few seconds to pull up the page whereas before on my O2 13 meg connection, it would be lightning quick. I have doen the usual like restart router, try different machine, connect through ethernet, call BT support etc etc, but the issue is still there. Ping times vary too. Sometimes 21ms sometimes above 30.

Has anyone else on infinity noticed the same?

I'm not on Infinity, but have you ruled-out DNS problems - e.g., what's it like for a forced reload or another page immediately afterwards on the same server, or using an IP address instead? That kind of latency feels like a name server issue.

Thanks for the reply DLS.

Yea, I think it mayhave something to do with the DNS too. Im not gona pretend I know everything about this kind of thing but what I did was try using open DNS and set it up via the network adapter setting thing. Still no difference really.

What I have noticed though is if I refresh the page that loaded up slowly again, it does show up quick, but this may be down to caching - im not sure.

Does anyone know if BT Business Fibre packages use the same DNS systems etc as the residential lot???

It does sound like a dodgy DNS - try using OpenDNS (you'll find them on the main page at the bottom right) instead and manually add them as your primary/secondary DNS in the TCP/IP settings on network card.

Thanks for the input everyone, much appreciated.

GMAN98 - No, u misunderstood. I'm not quibbling about ping. If you read my first post, I was just stating what I have seen in the ping tests and thought it may be related.

We have been using the internet for most of the day and there is definately a noticable delay. I'm not expecting miracles but for infinity I would hope it would be as good as my old O2. 'll try out the google DNS settings next. See if that helps at all.

To be fair no website or DNS is going to respond almost instantly.

There will always be some sort of delay while the request is made, the response returned and the data downloaded.
