Getting the best from wifi

[link to this post]

My FTTC connection went live today - 40/10 which is nice. Unfortunately my laptop isn't getting the best from it so I'm looking for advice.

The laptop has an Atheros ARB509 adaptor which is apparently 'n' compatible.

When connected to my WNR1000 set to 'up to 150Mbps' I only get 28Mb/s. I don't mind buying a WAP but I'm wondering if I'm expecting too much in hoping that my laptop might be able to match its wired speed of 38/9?

MaxDSL - goes as fast as it can and doesn't read the line checker first.

It doesn't want to admit anything, lol. Doesn't even think it has network access. On the plus side once or twice I have got something close to top speed:

My Broadband Speed Test

The upload still seems a bit low but I think that's the TBB tester. Other testers show 7Mb/s.
