Am I right in thinking a Cable router will work with fttc broadband?

Yes other than with Sky fibre as they still need you to use their router.

Used my DLink DIR855 for 14 months that was previously used with O2 for two years.

Often called cable routers any will do as long as its got an ethernet input from VDSL supplied modem.
Second OpenReach enginer came round and stated i need a Fibre router - There was three in front of him, Dlink, Netgear and a Tplink.
