New info from DSL Checker

[link to this post]

When checking line capability at BT Wholesale, I usually use either this plain DSL checker, or this slightly more colourful one.

I just used both of them, and they came up with something new:
Furthermore your exchange has been enabled for multicast services on fibre lines, please contact your provider for further details.

What does that mean? Something oriented at video?

I don't get it on my old line, which can still get fibre, so this is something different.

Looks like the enabling technology for the delivery of TV & video via your FTTC line, all you need now is for someone to actually offer that service !

It's spreading slowly. We've had the occasional one pop up for over a year, when we've asked to see what it says about someone's line.

With luck it will mean some streaming won't hit your bandwidth usage, as it will come from a cache at your exchange. Unless it is metered by number and merely saves the ISPs money.

Connection - Plusnet Extra Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 57.4/14.6Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

Multicast is more for live streaming, think live TV show, rather than video on demand, as the same bytes are delivered to everyone without the duplicating bandwidth.
