FTTC improvement?

[link to this post]

A question on upgrading to FTTC which I hope someone can help with.

I live in an area which is about to go live with FTTC (I hope, a few re-schedules but all cabinets in place and Openreach now saying accepting orders). The broadband availability checker tells me I can have FTTC from 30th June.

I am in a semi-rural location just under 1200m from the cabinet by road according to Google maps. The BT availability checker estimates I will get 9.3Mbps and also says I would get 6 Mbps with a range of 4-8Mbps with ASDL2+

I consistently and reliably have an 11.5-12Mbps ADSL2+ connection. Could I anticipate better than 9.3Mbps with FTTC or will the technology differences at the line length work against me? When my cabinet is fully enabled are further line tests run to give better certainty on the likely speed before I would place an order?

Table about 1/3rd the way down the page at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/guide/fibre-broadband....

1250m works out at around 17 Mbps for VDSL2

No real further tests take place before ordering, so if getting 11 to 12 reliably now, then its a bit of a incremental change

Thanks, that's helpful.

Incremental perhaps, but better than nothing smile

I would anticipate you getting a lot more speed with FTTC as I am about 1200m from my cabinet and get full 80/20

Your line length will not be 1200m.

You got your distance wrong, noone will get 80/20 at 1.2km of copper.

Beg to differ, my cabinet is P11 Probability 100% located on Middle Street Lancaster according to FTTC check http://fttc-check.alc.im/

I live on York Road, Lancaster and if you use Google Maps that is 1.2 Miles via road and that is nearly double 1200m so would be reasonable to assume a physical line length of 1200m.

1mi 350yd = 1929.4m

no chance, and whats the attenuation on the line?

even with vectoring 80/20 wont be seen on a 1.2km line. or even 1.9km line? even more of a dream.

Well, I've given you the facts as I know them and I'm connected at 80/20

The FTTC checker could be wrong about the cabinet but it does say "Probability 100%"

No idea what the attenuation is as Sky Routers don't tell you and I haven't bothered hacking into it to get line stats.

what cabinet does the BT Wholesale checker say you are on?

Perhaps post you're post code so the experts can take a look.

Edit. You'll need to use the address checker as your with sky.
