Two lines 50/0.9 and 50/16

[link to this post]

Looking at a 2 line FTTC setup yesterday, duplicate setups with same hardware etc and two Plusnet unlimited 80/20 services, speed test as per the title was under 1M for one line - ADSL territory.

Reflecting on it perhaps I should have tried a different / fancy RJ11 in case it was local interference. Any other ideas ? (ticket raised by end user with Plusnet)

Did you try to the wholesale checker to see what the profiles were set at?

Perhaps plus net have put the u/l profile for ADSL on the user (if that's possible)???

Same location?

If they were, I would guess you already tried swapping modems and routers.

Two thoughts - the profile has not been set correctly somewhere in the network. I had a 20mbps service but could only ever get 9.xx and it looked like it was capped at 10Mbps and after numerous reloading/rebuilding of profiles and the changes trickling through it suddenly jumped and 18.5Mbps ... There was a BT Tech here when it finally changed.

Or do the lines run back to the cabinet on different routes and there is a noise source on one path?

yes, the wholesale checker reported the correct profiles. Plusnet only have a downstream profile (which was also ok), your modem manages the upstream traffic.

one line doesn't pop up on the checker, so I can't be sure they're on the same cab but the lines arrive overhead from the same pole so highly likely. The lines go down to the basement where the kit lives, so something odd in the wiring isn't impossible, but it's a pretty well laid out and symmetrical setup as DIY is clearly his thing.

I did a router swap, but not modem, yet.

Split pair somewhere perhaps? Though I wouldn't expect as dramatic an effect as this. You'd expect downstream to be affected as well anyway.

Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 51.8/16.8Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

yeah I think the 0.9 line has a fault, what fault that is no idea, but 50/0.9 is not a balanced combination.

get a unlocked hg612 on it so we can see some graphs. smile

might do that if it persists and they ask me back.

The flatish RJ11 cable was draped a bit close to a PSU for my liking but the other one wasn't far away. Might suggest a better cable though I did move it away today without much benefit.

ETA - it's less than 100m from the FTTC cab. About 1/3 overhead from DP.
