Issues with slow download speeds

[link to this post]

Hi ive recently been getting odd results in internet speedtests , BT,s speedtester site giving much higher results than others. After noticing this i started using the download files on this site to test my actual download speeds. Previously to this issue i have used this site before to download the 1GB test file and would get around 5 - 6.5 Mbps . This has now dropped to 1.8 , ive also noticed issues streaming movies in HD when there have been none previously.

Im with BT so have a modem connected to the phone line then a HH3 (I have fiber to cabinet) to eliminate the router ive connected directly to the modem via ethernet and the results are the same.

BT tell me all is well as my speedtest on their site shows a nice 55 - 65 down and 14.5 up however my actual download sppeds seem to tell adifferant story as does the speedtester on this site

there is nothing else connected to the router ive checked i cant check any line stats as the modem seems to be locked out

Could the issue be with our laptop? Is it BT?

Thanks for any help

ps previous tests using your site have yielded higher results it seems to be getting worse by the day

Do you mean MegaBYTES/sec, not MegaBits?

If the shape of the graphs from http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html is very wiggly and the bt test is ok then suggests connection fine but a chunk of the internet busier than usual.

eres the test i did last night

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html...

i saw from your faq that a wiggly line on the first test is a sign of congestion but mines pretty straght. Im hoping its just a busy line but its been like this a while. Ill leave it a while and do a few daily tests see how it performs.

thanks laugh

It may be straight but a lot slower than several threads

Which can mean

Backhaul congestion
Low rwin
Browser or flash issue
