FTTC CAB's

[link to this post]

Hi

My local exchange is about to go live with FTTC (well by June anyway).

I've noticed two CAB's appear and roadworks.org confirms that they installing an 'NGA' CAB in both locations.

I live closer to the Exchange than the two new CAB locations, does that mean that my copper cabling goes direct to the Exchange, or to another CAB I've not noticed? If its the latter I'm assuming its not being turned on?

Is there any way I can check what CAB I'm connected to?

Thanks
Matt

Hi

Thats what I thought, but the response on the website doesnt quote the PCP no:

Telephone Number 01794XXXXXX on Exchange WEST WELLOW.

Does that mean my line goes straight to the Exchange? Its a semi-rural area.

I suspect it does, but I'm not 100% sure- maybe someone else could comment?

You are indeed on an "EO" line (Exchange Only). You may be lucky and get a CAB installed outside the Exchange but its not likely.

TalkTalk 24Mb
Current Line Status

Connection Speed 24272 Kbps 1019 Kbps
Line Attenuation 14.5 dB 5.5 dB
Noise Margin 0.3 dB 11.8 dB

thanks for clarifying.

So does that mean the line cannot be upgraded to VDSL2?

Will I get any benefit in the technology being changed? I'm 122 meters from the exchange as the crow flies.

Cheers

At the moment you are stuck with ADSL unless Virgin Media Cable is in your area.

If the exchange is upgraded to 21CN (if not already) then you will possibly get a speed boost as a result of being able to get ADSL 2+.

Alternatively the fibre may be fed from a different exchange in which case there would be no need to upgrade the exchange.

Due to regulations which control interference VDSL equipment can not currently be installed inside the exchange, it requires a new PCP cabinet to be installed outside the exchange along with a fibre cabinet.

You may be lucky at get a cab though, on my exchange they built a fibre cabinet outside the exchange, well two if you count one that is directly opposite the exchange and then the other about 100 yards up the road.

In the next town I have also seen a fibre cabinet outside the exchange as well. I just think it is luck! I wish I was only a couple of hundred metres away from the exchange and not 2 miles with no fibre!

Yeah 3 local exchanges here are all having cabinets built just outside the exchange so it would appear all is not lost for people on EO only lines anymore.
