Wifi - my devices work, but my housemates don't

[link to this post]

Hi,
I hope someone here can help me! I understand a bit about wifi and networks, but not loads...

I have Virgin fibre optic and I'm using the SH 1.

My devices all seem to connect and get decent wifi speed most of the time.
My house mate has strugged with connection for the past 9 months since he moved in.

We both have iphones - mine's fine, but his loses connection regularly. He also has an Apple mac which loses signal fairly often.

He's tried sitting right next to the hub, but it's made no difference. It often says he's connected, but internet pages won't load.

I'd assume it was his mac that's the problem, but as he's also having issue with his iphone it must be something else...

Any ideas please?

Exact same model of iPhone? And same version of iOS?

To me it sounds like potentially user error, are you sure he is selecting the correct access point and not a neighbours? One of your neighbours may have removed the security on their router, making it easy for your housemate to connect by accident, which would account for the poor signal.

To your knowledge, would you or anybody else have setup extra security such as MAC address filtering on the Access point/Router? This might explain the lack of connection for your friend.

Surely he wouldn't be able to connect at all if it was the security settings?

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 56.6/14.1Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

Good thinking. That happens remarkably frequently.

It depends on the router. Mine will let you connect to the SSID but won't give you an IP address (an therefore internet/network access) unless your MAC address is in the allowed list. It will appear to be connected though. You'd just get a generic 169.xxx.xxx.xxx IP as you'd normally do if your PC can't find a DHCP server.

Might be an idea getting the OP to check her friend's IP address. If it's in the 169.xxx.xxx.xxx range then something is definitely up.

With a web browser look at the routers network info and note the Ip address and Gateway and DNS setting.
On your room mate phone go to WiFi networking and set up a 'Fixed' ip addres gateway and DNS.
(Ask if you don not know how)
That should work.
