Changing ISP and upgrading to Fibre

[link to this post]

I am considering changing ISP and upgrading to Fibre. It will be a FTTC arrangement. Will I need to replace the phone extension cable that currently connects the master socket (side of the house) to the router (currently ADSL at center of the house) ? I presume I will have a fibre modem at the master socket and a new fibre router at the center of the house. If I need to replace the phone extension cable, what type of cable do I need ?

What will happen and what you need to do partly depends on which ISP you migrate to and which of their products you take.

What you describe is how many ISPs still do it, but BT, Sky and TalkTalk do different things for the 38Mbps and 76Mbps FTTC.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 56.4/14.5Mbps @ 600m. - IPv4BQM IPv6BQM

If you locate an Openreach modem at the master socket, then the extension will be redundant as the link to the fibre router would need to be Ethernet based.

FTTC can work on extensions, i.e. exactly where the modem is now, but this can impact speed as VDSL2 is more sensitive to radio interference and distance

Thanks for the response, my initial choice is Zen.

I've just got Zen 80/20 and really can't complain, it's been amazing, speeds always sound and ping is good, this is my ping graph: My Broadband Ping

And the all important speed test:

When I've got the music, I've got a place to go.

BT > Zen > Virgin Media > BT > Zen 80/20

A good ISP smile.

I suggest you ring and discuss it with them. They do supply the available the TG589n which is an integrated unit that could just replace your existing ADSL2+ modem/router, with the risk of degraded performance if used at your extension as described by MrSaffron. Compare the A and B lines on this checker. (It might be worth copy and pasting the results table for slightly more informed comment).

Note that at the time of posting that modem/router is showing as out of stock at Zen.

I knew there was something I missed out, sorry. That the 589n appears to be listed against their business products. Some negotiation may be necessary, as long as they intend to replenish the stock.
