Best fibre broadband & router for gaming (Counter strike GO)

[link to this post]

Hi,
Please can you recommend me the best Fibre broadband provider and router for online gaming. I mostly play Counter Strike GO, where low latency is massively important. I have been looking at Zen, but would appreciate some advice from people in the know. Also I have no idea which is the best router for this.

Thanks for any help.

Regards
Steve

Best would probably be some expensive Cisco with a course needed to configure it.

In the meantime if its just you using the connection then really no difference so long as its a modern router and you connect via Ethernet.

In a shared environment a device that supports Quality of Service so you can give priority to the gaming UDP/TCP traffic is the issue.

The latency of the FTTC service if interleaving is used will counter any benefit you get between spending £70 and £300 on a router.

I always find SKY having better latency than BT

I can't really comment on others I do remember plusnet having decent ping also

router shouldn't make too much different as long as its connected via Ethernet.

SKY FTTC - 40/10

If budget is not of an concern, look at AAISP - no filtering at all.

Had Sky 40/10 with constant 6-7ms ping on speedtest.net choosing servers really close to me. Bt 80/20 now, same good start but after a change my ping jumped to 14ms, still good I think.

If you are able to order 80mb then 40mb is probably not interleaved. If you order 80mb and end up syncing less, then you will probably end up interleaved, raising latency. ISPs have no control over interleaving unlike on ADSL.

Interleaving is certainly an issue, typically adding 8ms to ping times. FTTC interleaving will be the same regardless of which SIP.

My latency was poor on BT because of very poor internal routing in the BT internal network (Winchester->Sheffield->London) that typically added another 9ms to pings; around 22ms to bbc without interleaving. This has been much better on Plusnet, around 13ms without interleaving. I suspect that difference will vary a lot depending on where you live; many people quoted sub 10ms pings on BT.

Recently moved from BT Infinity 2 to PlusNet. Very happy so far.

So would I be better off on a 40mb package?
