Overnight 15Mbps speed increase!

[link to this post]

Sometime just before 10am this morning, my download sync speed has increased from around 62Mbps to 78Mbps and uplaod from about 17Mbps to 19Mbps and I can't really explain how. My stats:

Downstream Upstream
Line Coding (Trellis) On On
SNR Margin (dB) 6.4 6.1
Attenuation (dB) 19.1 0.0
Output Power (dBm) 12.6 7.4
Attainable Rate (Kbps) 78605 19262
Rate (Kbps) 78018 19262
B (# of bytes in Mux Data Frame) 243 239
M (# of Mux Data Frames in an RS codeword) 1 1
T (# of Mux Data Frames in an OH sub-frame) 0 64
R (# of redundancy bytes in the RS codeword) 10 14
S (# of data symbols over which the RS code word spans) 0.0996 0.3965
L (# of bits transmitted in each data symbol) 20404 5125
D (interleaver depth) 8 1
I (interleaver block size in bytes) 254 127
N (RS codeword size) 254 254
Delay (msec) 0 0
INP (DMT symbol) 49.00 0.00
OH Frames 0 0
OH Frame Errors 0 0
RS Words 4721064 1201279
RS Correctable Errors 50728 0
RS Uncorrectable Errors 0 0
HEC Errors 0 0
OCD Errors 0 0
LCD Errors 0 0
Total Cells 17745357 0
Data Cells 3999 0
Bit Errors 0 0
Total ES 0 0
Total SES 0 0
Total UAS 28 28

There have been no disconnections according to the Billion 8800nl's logs or from looking at my stats on mydslwebstats - they have just increased!

The only thing that's changed in my house is that British Gas condemned my boiler and turned it off - but that was last Thursday.

Anyone got any ideas??

Just checked and BT's IP profile for my line is 75.43Mbps

I have a line with 16dB attenuation. It runs with either 75xxx or 79xxx sync - it will suddenly just switch and why I have no idea as te SNR margin remains at 6dB which suggests a noise source comes and goes.

In your case, 78 Mbps on a 19dB attenuation suggests that the line is quiet and that a noise source has disappeared.

It could well be that the management systems have taken a few days to catch up with the boiler being turned off - if that was a source of noise.

Your boiler being off may well be the clue. Older central heating pumps can cause major issues.

We had interference in the house that would make some radio channels unusable, I could never find the source.

The the heating pump died, the new pump had an RF filter on the power lead, the engineer said they now all have that as the old pumps caused interference problems.

Since the new pump was installed we have not had any RF interference .

Yeah I was thinking the boiler would most probably be the cause. New one is being fitted end of the week so hopefully it has the rf filter fitted too and I keep the extra 15Mbps of speed smile

The new speed is more like what I should have had when I moved in in September as that's what the neighbours either side of me sync at. I never could pin down what was causing the slower speeds.

Your BQM suggests a resync just before 11am, and another one just after 1pm yesterday.

What were your stats before/after each of these events?

The stats you show suggest they've only gone through a single sync since power on (total UAS=28).

The resync yesterday was when an electrician was doing work to prepare for new boiler.

The one today was me doing a restart to see if the extra speed stayed - it did. The stats after the restart yesterday were normal i.e sync around 62Mbps.

Can you get DSL stats running? If so, let it monitor the line and on the day the install happens keep a close eye on it and note the time the boiler is switched on to see if there are any sync or SNR glitches.

Yeah I have it running constantly on a spare PC - it's been running for months. It also uploads all of the stats to the MyDSLWebStats website too. Looking at it, the sync increased at 10.04am this morning but there were no drops until I manually reconnected to make sure it wasn't temporary.

I'll keep my eye on it and fingers crossed, the extra speed will stay once the new boiler is installed.

I've just been talking to Plusnet via online chat and they've updated my line profile to match BT's at 75.4 now so I'll give it a good testing later wink

Very bizarre for such a large change to not appear as part of a resync, and for no disturbance to the BQM.

I guess your MDWS data is hidden. I went looking, but couldn't see anything that matched.
