Long line experience

[link to this post]

I was wondering if anyone here who has a long line to their cab (about 1 mile) could give me some idea of their experience with it and whether it was worthwhile.

On ADSL I usually connect around 2400 Kbps

Essentialy you won't known unless you try it. You might get 4meg, you might get nothing.

I've posted this so many times people must be getting bored.
I live 1.2miles as the line goes from cabinet, was told would get between 7 and 11, after three engineer visits I'm told best likely is 4mb but am only getting 2.53mb.

Slightly off-topic, but may I ask what the estimates are on BT's checker? I live about 1 mile by road from my cabinet and it suggests 30-22mbps on a clean line, and 23-11mbps on an impacted line. I'm just asking because I want to know whether it'll be worth going through all the fuss just to find out I can only get around 5-10 mbps.

Thanks

You'll *probably* get a better upload speed, whether that's important to you depends.

BT Infinity 2, 43mbs down 9mbs up

Impacted is usually the worse case, so I would expect over 11Mbps.

Don't do much uploading so that is not important

Hi,

I'm approximately 1.5km by road to my cabinet and cannot see how my line length would be any shorter so I estimate my length to be around 1.5km - 1.8km in length, dslchecker suggests...

20.6 - 13.3 (Clean)
15.6 - 6.1 (Impacted)

But I'm currently sitting at just under 23Mbps and hasn't budged over the past 5 months since getting the connection. Lucky I guess, but I was expecting my speed to be around 10Mbps.

My line speeds are very similar, I am on the West Chiltington exchange.

It may be galling to pay out to get such a small improvement in speed but it is defiantly worth it.

However, if the cabinet is very new the speed and availability may be wrong. If it has been in use for a few months you should be OK.

It would be worth using the checker to see your neighbours speeds. You will quickly get an idea if you are on the edge of the coverage area - assuming you can work out the route of the cable from the cabinet. I am right on the edge of the coverage area and get between 3 and 5Mbps. I think that you may do slightly better than that.
