Uno are requesting a frames SFI from OR to investigate further.

Why ???

Why is requesting a frames SFI visit (the engineer goes to the exchange and tests ADSL sync from CP equipment there) a suitable course of action when you are reporting a problem with your FTTC service ???

Because this allows us to get Openreach to send an engineer to the cabinet to do the reset without their insistence that we need an appointed visit for an engineer to the property. It does not always work but means that we don't then have play the repeated game of disputing charges when Openreach do resets at the cab citing no fault found in property and charging us for their idiocy.

Largely a closure code/training issue but avoids these incorrect charges but often the need for someone to take a day off when no access to the property is really required.

...... But they won't be doing the DLM reset you wish for for a frames SFI will they ?

Yes, they do.

This was originally a suggestion from an escalated complaint (about a similarly related DLM fault with three missed appointments due to high work stack with OR) to get around having to appoint a visit. It's surprising how well it works. Not always possible (90% success rate) but does avoid visits when just a reset is required.

So tell me Matt, what do you put on the task notes ?

Please visit the exchange, test for non existent sync on ADSL equipment, (the 'by the book' requirement of a frames only SFI) oh, and whilst there can you do a DLM reset on a product you've not asked Openreach to test please ?

Get the appointment, get the pair quality test done, have the set up and sync checked in the property, let the punter have a discussion as to what the actual fault is.

If it is solely a reset, that is what is entered.

For the amount of appointments that we used to arrange just for resets, this has shown to be a better option.

OR are happy to accept this request for the type of service they already know is on the line and they do the work that we've asked. If OR had an issue they'd not accept it.

Given that OR suggested we try this based on a complaint about them appointing three visits, which they didn't even turn up for because they didn't have enough resource - we have used it where needs be.

In reply to a post by Zarjaz:
the engineer said vibrations sometimes make one of them come out of the connector in the cabinet,

Used to be the case with the, now rarer, PC100 terminations.

These days it usually 'Edward Scissorhands" the pushed for time contractor who causes it. frown

It is a few years ago when it happened to me.

Openreach Engineer came on Monday and tested the line, was able to get 80/20 at the NTE despite the modem only syncing at 40/10. He seemed to think the cable between the master socket and modem may be faulty, although I'm not sure how he came to that conclusion (I wasn't around).

Couple of phone calls later and he had the DLM reset, which allowed the modem to sync at 65/20 again, although that shortly dropped to 55.

The line resynced this morning and has gone back to 40/10 so I'm going to try swapping the modem cable out and source an HG612 from somewhere.

That will be a good move - at least you can then see what is happening.

So I've sourced an HG612 and replaced the DSL cable, so all the CPE has been replaced. Below are the stats I've pulled off it. The attenuation seems high as the line was previously able to get 74Mbps without much of an issue, and we're probably only around 400m from the cabinet (I don't believe the line takes any funny routes).
