wifi speed

[link to this post]

Hi, can a mobile phone with band 2.4 speed connect to router on band speed of 5.0.and if not is there a way round it..The router can only work on either 5 or 2.4.. If one to choose 2.4 band on the router, the internet connection becomes poor.

The internet connection is probably still fine.....it is the wifi connection that becomes poor.

no a phone with only 2.4Ghz cannot connect to 5Ghz.

Workaround....buy a router that can broadcast both bands, or change your phone to one that uses 5Ghz.

Have you got an old router that does 2.4?

If you have, tell us what it is, and we can probably tell you how to make it work as a wireless access point for your current one.

So your current one controls the system and provides 5GHz, with your phone connecting to the old one providing 2.4GHz.

Basically the old one would connect to the current via ethernet, but would need some settings changed. You can't just connect them, without causing problems.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - AAISP Home::1 80/20. Sync 63086/13719Kbps @ 600m. BQMs - IPv4 & IPv6

What router do you have? Very few are single band either 5ghz or 2.4ghz. Plenty are 2.4 only...

Be wary in your thinking.

2.4 GHz is the "centre" frequency of the radio band used by WiFi, not its "speed"; and that radio band is shared with many legally and officially-unlicensed items, such as microwave cookers, baby monitors etc.

Similar for the 5 GHz Wi Fi, although less sharing with other devices.

Technically the 5 GHZ has less penetrating ability etc through walls etc, ie it is absorbed and turned in to heat - miniscule etc but still very much attenuated as a radio signal.

In my own case, the 5 GHz circuit is typically 10 dB worse than the 2.4 GHz, around the house and garden etc. Measured at about 20 points.
