Slow speed on fibre

[link to this post]

Hello there, just found these forums and I was wondering if you could help me.

I use sky fibre broadband and have done several speed tests I should be getting around 40mbs but am getting download speed of 34.57 and upload 6.84mbs is this correct or should it be higher, I am not a tech guru and thank you for your help in advance. Emma

When you say you "should" get around 40Mbps do you mean you are paying for an up to 40Mbps package or that you have other reason to expect 40? The way your broadband works (which is almost certainly FTTC) is that speed is dependent on how far you are from the cabinet - the lower upstream suggests you may be a reasonable distance from the cabinet which would mean both downstream and upstream would be slower.

What we really need is the statistics from your router - looks like there is a video here that will hopefully show you how to get the stats we need from the router then we can advise you further. If the video doesn't help then this might

Yes I am paying for 40mbs, as regards the fibre cabinet it is approx. 50 metres from my home here are the stats from my router how clever am to get them lol

Thank you for your help

You're connected at 40mbps (connection speed 39998kbps).

A throughput of around 35 is not abnormal.

If the line is only 50m then the upstream is very low. Either there is something not quite right with the line or it is going "around the houses" (literally) from the cab to your property.

What do the estimates on the BT Wholesale Checker say for your phone number? If you copy and paste the results remember to remove the phone number from the paste.

EDIT : Oops, typo - downstream in first paragraph should have said upstream. Fixed

With an attenuation of 20, the cab may well be 50m away but the line is a whole lot longer.

The OP is on a 40/10 service so there's absolutely nothing wrong with the downstream.

OP - you'll need to use the address checker on the site Ian has linked. Your Sky LLU phone number won't work.

Suggests it is maybe around 600m cable length ...

Even then, I would expect a full 9999/10000 upstream although te SNR at just over 6 points to a high noise level on that.

Thank you for your help so far, obviously the phone line checker does not work and neither does the address checker, the only one that works is the postcode checker which only gives me adsl details
