Who owns the Fibre Networks in the UK

[link to this post]

Hi I am trying to find out who owns the Fibre networks in the UK

Specifically in a given city/town who are fibre network operators.

I presume Openreach and Virgin, would have fibre networks in most cities who else?

Thanks

CityFibre have presence in quite a few cities in the UK.

Sky/TalkTalk have a small FTTP network in York.

What do you mean by fibre networks?

Fibre to the premises?
Metro fibre?
Core fibre forming a national network between major cities?

I doubt Openreach own the fibre network. It's far more likely that the network is owned by BT.

Hi MrSaffron,

All 3 would be relevant

However metrofibre woud be the most interesting.

Essentially I would like to know how many metro networks are there in the towns and cities across the UK.

Would it be correct to say that in the majority of towns and cities Openreach and Virgin own metro networks

CityFibre would be the third largest with metro networks in 42 town/cities.

For example in Peterborough ,Virgin, Openreach and CityFibre have a presence is there anyone else and would it be possible to expand this to other cities?

I believe the fibre in York is a JV between Sky/TalkTalk and CityFibre

Yes CityFibre have metro networks in 42 cities

Rich

The major cities, London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh , Glasgow have quite a few operators with their own fibre networks, usually to serve Business customers. London has so many that OFCOM deregulated the business market about 15 years ago as BT had (at that time) less than 15% of fibre access customers.

There may be info on the OFCOM site that give some info, look at the last set of private circuit regulatory consultations to get some idea of the scale of networks out there.

Fibre networks for Consumers are a different thing and there are far fewer companies in the sector.

Sky also have or had a small FTTP network in Basingstoke. Sky pulled out of the York trial last year and sold their stake to Talk Talk.

Uh, "Openreach" is BT, at least for now. Both are simply trading names of British Telecommunications plc, company no 1800000.

My setup: Huawei HG612 VDSL2 modem. Linksys WRT1900ACS router. AAISP Home::1 80/20 200GB + copper pair on TTB (by request). Sync: 79987/20000 kbit/s, attainable ~91-94000/31-32000 kbit/s via ~180m of 1985 copper to ECI Cabinet 14, Milford Exchange (WMMFD)

BQM: IPv4 & IPv6

ISP Hx: Wanadoo ~2Mb (Orange takeover) > Freedom2Surf ~4Mb (TalkTalk takeover) > Virgin Media 10->30->50->70Mb (unnecessary second line as work reqd BT) > BT Inf 2 80Mb (04/17 rises, no retention offer) > Virgin Media 100Mb (awful pings) > AAISP 80Mb
