Openreach DSL Checker only shows 52mb speeds available

Hi,
I am expecting fibre to be available at my premesis in the next few months. After looking on the DSL checker, it only states that the 52 mb speed package will be available. Is this because the line is too long to support a 70mb connection? I am around 400m from the cabinet, and the cabinet is about 700m from the exchange.

Edit: The normal DSL checker doesn't mention products. It just gives maximum connection speeds. What DSL checker are you using?

Assuming that it's the normal checker and that 52Mb/s is what it's giving for 'Downstream Line Rate' then:

Possibly. It could also be poor quality cabling (eg; aluminium instead of the more common copper).

Whatever the reason that's most likely the speed you're going to get. It may only be an estimate but they aren't often that far off.

If your cable covers that distance in a straight line (they usually follow pavements and roads) then I'd say the estimate is on the low side but if the cable meanders a bit then 52Mb/s could be reasonable.

On the basis of that result I'd probably only go for a 55/10 package myself although it's possible that a 76/20 package might get you a faster upload speed.
and the cabinet is about 700m from the exchange.
That has no bearing on connection speed.

When i had sky fibre the bt wholesale availability checker gived me a result of 53 downstream line and 14 upstream line however once installed it synced about 65 downstream and 17 upstream but from what i remember i had the 40/10 then upgraded to 76/20 so the checker isnt 100% true.

Now looking at the bt wholesale availability checker i can see is been updated from when i had sky fibre back in 2014

There's a chart which gives approximate FTTC download speed versus line length from cabinet here: https://www.increasebroadbandspeed.co.uk/2013/chart-...

I haven't found a corresponding chart for upload speed, but it seems that upload speed drops more dramatically; for example I have 34-35M download sync speed but only 5-5.5M upload sync speed (as reported by the modem; it varies every few days due to DLM)

Presumably the configuration favours headline download speed over upload. (Personally I would trade 5M of download for a corresponding increase in upload!)

The chart is an average.

The banding used on FTTC means that you need to look at the spectrum to fully understand while some see much lower upload, i.e. one whole upload band may be missing due to attenuation or noise issues.

The adslchecker gives me an expected downstream range of 37.9-25.9, and upstream 7.2-5 (on a clean line). So I'm close to the bottom of the expected upstream range.

The modem is a Vigor 130. I'm on a Huawei cabinet. The spectral bins for upstream are shown below - is there anything useful you can glean from this?

A chart for upload speed would not work in the U.K
Cabinets at different distances from the exchange have different power cut-back levels to prevent crosstalk impacting the existing ADSL lines.

That's partly why you see some with 51/18 and others with 51/8

If you think you have a lower upstream than others with similar downstream, being a good few km's from the exchange would be 1 of the reasons.

I'm within the predicted band, so I don't think I can really complain.

The cabinet (P7) is just across the road from the exchange (Hildenborough). I'm roughly 800m walking route from the cabinet.

Anyway, I was just trying to make the point that if your downstream speed is (say) half the maximum, your upstream speed could be significantly lower than half the maximum.
