FTTC Cabinet extension

[link to this post]

I have just seen a Huewei large cabinet with an extension about 6" wide on the side. What's this for?

Space for an extra line card so more VDSL2 ports are available i.e. resolve capacity issues

Found out more. The 6 cards have been upgraded to 64 port ones, so 384 total. This involves new wiring harnesses which connect to blocks in the extension.

It's commonly referred to as an HD (high density) extension.
As you say it replaces the 6 x 48 port line cards with 6 x 64 port high density line cards.
