Speed Drop

[link to this post]

My broad band speed has been like this http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/results/03973011.png
for almost a year now,up until 9th June, with no problems

Sometime between 9th June and 16th June it went to this
http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/results/04044747.png
and it's been like this for over a week now.

Nothing seems to have changed much, no problems with phone line/computer etc

Any one any ideas please

Hi gittos,
I'm assuming you mean nothing has changed at all with your set up smile
Plus you know the router and micro filters are OK.
Try the tests with the router ethernet wired to the PC if possible (you never know if someone is piggy backing your connection if your wireless security is not up to scratch tongue)

Anyway it's best to connect to the test socket within the Master BT socket (NTE5 type if you have that) for any further checks in case there are any wiring type problems your side of the master socket.

There are a number of things that can cause a loss of speed like congestion/problems at your exchange more noticeable when things get busy in the evenings or the gateway/pipe you are connected to is also getting congested.
If the data is up to date this might show if there is a problem at the exchange.

An event like a noise burst can cause your router to disconnect/loose sync with the exchange and resync at a lower speed causing your profile to drop. The noise margin can rise from the default 6dB in 3dB increments because of the effect of noise and again if you loose sync your profile drops as does the line speed.
In certain senarios it can take up to 5 days (sometimes even a few more) for your profile to get back to what it should be before the noise problems/loss of sync occured.

For a start try to get a speed result + profile from this link, it may take a while to connect to if it's busy.

The other thing to check is the line stats which you get from the router as that will show if the noise margin is high.

Many thanks for your reply Alistair

Tried the ethernet cable - no change
Can't change the filter at the moment - no spare one

Got this info from the D-Link router site - sorry it doesn't make much sense to me, but I did notice the Data Rate figures - 2976 downstream & 448 Upstream.

When I run the Think Broadband Speed Tester on the MAAF Home Page it says my Dowmload speed is approx 2300

I have not been able to access the BT System Checker yet -it's always busy

Many Thanks Again

The downstream SNR margin is a bit higher than the BT target margin of 6dB,it is suggested that each 3dB of SNR margin above that could drop the speed by 400kbps - 1200 kbps.

One thing to try is to remove the ring wire connection in the master socket, >>> KITZ website

My BB speed is back to normal today (30/06/09)

url=http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk]

I haven't done anything, so I presume it was something at the exchange ???

Thanks again for the input though

@gittos, I would warrant a guess that your IP profile has been lowered. This can happen if your modem or router resynchronises with the exchange at a sub-standard speed. The most common cause for this is noise interference or an issue with your local kit, cabling or wiring.

A BT Speedtest would tell you for sure whether or not your IP profile has been lowered.

James wrote a pretty good blog on speed diagnostics last year that can be seen here.
