Disconnection Problems

[link to this post]

I keep getting disconnected from the internet and then it takes me many attempts to get reconnected again. Then, when I am connected, it takes absolutely ages for a page to download. I have unplugged the modem and left it for about an hour before plugging it in again, but I am still continually being disconnected. Is anyone else experiencing these problems? It's been like it all day and it's driving me mad!

If you are using a wireless connection then connect the computer and router by ethernet cable and see if the problem persists.
If it does is it possible for you to connect to the TEST socket within the BT Master socket in order to eliminate any problems with extensions and sockets etc.
Again if the problem persists it would be wise to try another router in case there is a problem with the original.
I assume everything that should be micro-filtered is and that the filters are OK.

Check the status of your exchange >>> link, there could be issues there.

Edit >>> Has this problem just occured today?

Thanks for your response Alistair - it's much appreciated! I was using a wireless connection (D-Link) and so I've just followed your advice and connected by ethernet cable. After connecting using ethernet cable, MAAF tech support have just emailed me stating that they have noticed I have a 'dropping connection'. In answer to your question, yes, everything was fine up until today and I've not changed anything nor connected any new devices in my home, so I really don't know what the problem is. I've been with MAAF for over a year now and have never had this problem before. I don't have another router I can try but I will now go and try the other things you have suggested. Many thanks!
I have just checked the status of my exchange and all is well there.

Well the next thing to do is to copy and paste the line stats which you can get from the D-link router all going well smile

Obtain line stats link

You could post the result from this BT Speedtest too, but it might take you a few attemps to connect to if it is busy.

I have exactly the same problem.I have posted about it under "desperate" and Bob suggests i sort out the problem of the crackling on the line first.i am certain they are connected.Would it be advisable to get someone in and replace the wiring from the red box on my outside wall into the house and the master socket in any case.It looks a bit flat and bent in places.

Hi froglet,
Whatever is causing the crackling on the line will have to be sorted first.
The red box you mention, is it part of an alarm system?

Ideally you would want to connect your corded phone into the TEST socket within the BT master socket if it has that facility and then listen for the crackling noise.

The TEST socket bypasses any problems caused by phone extensions and a problematic alarm system if your house has one fitted (providing the alarm has been wired into the correct connection within the master socket)

Don't disconnect any of the coloured wires, but make a note of the number of wires connected to the other part of the socket if possible.

Thanks for your reply.Yes i have been in ommunication about both problems all day with Madasafish. The red box is where the wires are from the BT lines outside.I presume that is the master socket? No alarm system.

Then I have the box inside that we have an extension to in the lounge.I believe the upstairs phone line comes from the red box also.I took the front off the white socket this morning but could not see a further socket inside. So i am well confused now!

All i know is my broadband stayed connected this morning for 4 and a half hours But from 2.30 pm onwards it was on and off and is really playing up now.I just wish i knew whther the crackling on the phone was causing the drop in connections.

Not sure about the red box being a Master Socket/Line Jack Unit as most are situated within the building (I read on one of the other TB forums that very recent new builds could have a grey waterproof box fitted externally with a master and/or test socket within them).

Do the phone wires to the house/red box come from a nearby pole or are they underground?

Sounds like you don't have an NTE5 master socket which is not uncommon as in various decades newer/different boxes were used.
The socket is probably on the page here I would think, to enlarge a picture click on it.

If the problem is between the exchange and Master Socket then I would guess that as part of your rental contract Madasafish will contact BT Openreach to investigate the problem.

As long as you carry out the tests as Bob and CS have asked you to do then hopefully your problem with the noisey line will be sorted.

If an BT engineer is sent out to sort a Voice fault it's best not to mention Broadband problems till that Voice fault is corrected as it might cloud the issue.

hi again.I feel a bit silly now because i have found out the red box is an aerial splitter!! I got confused because of the fact the box was not as described inside,ie another test socket. Our computer friend who came round tonight confirmed we just have the one main box, inside the hall.I know when i plugged the corded pghone into it this morning it was still noisy. So hopefully we should be able to get it fixed.

Thanks for your help and advice.

update,(as posted in my original post"desperate" )the noise on the phone line has been diagnosed and new wiring put in by BT. Madasafish are installing "interleaving" on my broadband which they say should help with the drops in connnection.
