Cisoc VPN CLient over madasafish

[link to this post]

Hello,

Does anyone have issues using Cisco VPN client to connect to their workplace? This used to work but it has stopped. The error message I am getting is
"Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the client. Reason 412: The remote peer is no longer responding."

I can ping and tracert to the address but not connect.

Does anyone have the same issue and or any ideas?

Many

If you are using OpenDNS as you DNS servers then the Cisco VPN client will not resolve names on a private network.

More info from Open DNS

http://www.opendns.com/support/article/148

http://www.opendns.com/support/article/164

Of course id you are not using the OpenDNS servers then this isn't applicable.

Thanks DavidBloor,
I'm not using DNs i'm specifying the IP address, and using the default DNS servers which maaf provides when I switch my router on.

Cheers

Are you using a DHCP assigned IP address? If so, what is the lease period? I know of one VPN product (may not be Cisco) that gets a little flaky during DHCP lease renewal times.

Hi,

I have used this previously and been ok.

Error 412 could be your password incorrect on the Concentrator Group password or a corrupt PCF (which in turn would represent an invalidusername/password used to validate)

Have you had this working previously?

I have had this working previously, although i think it was a 4.X version of cisco. It was around June.
I can see that it is contacting the gateekeeper, yet I do not get asked for my username and password.
I have recently had a new laptop from work which cam with 5.0.04.430.
I have used a few different pcf files and they all result in the same issue, not getting the username and password box.
At work I have patched a broadband connection to my desk, not sure who it is, its on my list to find out, but it works Ok on that one, which to me points to either my broadband or my router.

I have changed the DHCP lease period form 0(which it has been for a few years) to 5 days, and that hasn't made a difference.

I believe MAAF supply a Thomson TG585v7 router.
If using that it may be a firmware problem, the latest fw has fixed some vpn issues with the router.

I have been with MAAF since they where freenetname, so I only ever received the USB broadband modem about 8 years ago. I bought a linksys WAG54 router about 5 years + ago, and have been using that ever since with no problem.

I know there's a registry fix you have to make for IPSEC over NAT-T on Windows, but I don't know if that's the problem you're having.

There's some details here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926179 but it's not quite the same fix for Win 7.

Thanks BatBoy,
I'll have a look at the regfix to see if this makes a difference. I've also read the other thread you posted the link to but I don't it is the same issue as I can't get connected in the first place.

I found this:
Windows 7 L2TP/IPsec Instructions
To add a necessary registry setting:

1. In the Start menu search box, type "regedit" and press ENTER
* You will be prompted to allow Administrator rights, click Yes.
2. Locate and click the registry subkey named HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PolicyAgent
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and click DWORD Value
4. In the New Value #1 box, type "AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule" (this is case-sensitive and contains no spaces), and press ENTER.
5. Right-click AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule, and select Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type "2" and click OK
7. Reboot the computer

BatBoy,
I've tried that and I still get the same result, error 412.

I've a ticket with MAAF but they seem to be passing the buck.

I'll try and find a diff router to test with incase that is the issue, and I'll find out the broadband I use in the office which works.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Roger,

Sorry, i had not realised you had replied as i received no notification.

If this has worked previously with your equipment then i would use a new PCF file in your client. This would either mean removing the current one and just importing it from the original source you were provided with or having to contact the VPN Concentrator admins and had a new PCF mailed to you.

Have you turned on Logging in the client too? That can usually suggest credentials too.

I support this setup daily and Error 412 is almost always a corrupt PCF or invalid credentials being parsed between the Concentrator and the client, its never been an ISP problem but one at either end of the connection (be it connectivity due to firewalls or account variances (invalid or corrupt).

I'll keep an eye out for this now!
