BT 21CN Upload Speed only 448kbps

[link to this post]

Having just been moved onto the 21CN network from IPStream, I was pleased to see an increase in download speed. However, my upload speed has remained the same. When I checked my modem status and ran the bt speed tester, I realised that something was not right.

After a lengthy conversation with a technical level 1 member at Orange, I got nowhere.
Whilst I understand there is a training period in progress, I still think there is an issue with the current upstream IP profile.

Here are my line stats:
Downstream
Line Attenuation 4.1 dB
Noise margin 4.3 dB
Modem Connection Speed 20739 Kbps
IP Profile 18.3 Kbps

Upstream
Line Attenuation 1.6 dB
Noise Margin 29.6 dB
Modem Connection Speed 444 Kbps
IP Profile 448 Kbps

The bt broadband tester says I have a downstream IP profile of 18.3 Mbps which seems fine, but the upstream IP profile is 448Kbps.

From what I can see, the Line Attenuation / Noise Margin for upstream could easily support higher upstream rates.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

I had a similar problem. Ask your ISP to uncap the upload speed. My ISP said this may reduce the download speed, but I have not noticed any change, but upload speed has gone up to .9Mbps.

Wait out the 10-day training period and it will raise to 888, Interleaved, or even higher Fast Path.

Only annex M should affect the downstream speeds.

Five days in and no change to the upstream profile - still 448Kbps.

The downstream moves up and down a little, but the profile sits around 18Mbps.

I suppose the next question is, "What upstream speed should I be expecting?".
"Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 17Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 10Mbps and 19.5Mbps. Our test also indicates that your line could support an estimated ADSL 2+ Annex-M broadband upstream line speed of 1.5Mbps and downstream line speed of 17Mbps; typically the downstream speed would range between 10Mbps and 19.5Mbps."

I am guessing that I do not have Annex-M...
Is there an Orange technical helpline that would give me a definitive answer to the upstream question?

have have the same problem with the upstream being stuck at 444 kbps & its been like it for months now when i spoke to someone at orange he seemed to have no clue why it was like this & tbh did not seem bothered enough to try to sort it out for me.

my router stats are
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 15080 Kbps 444 Kbps
Line Attenuation 25.7 dB 14.9 dB
Noise Margin 9.0 dB 31.0 dB

I have noticed in the last week or so the noise margin on the download has gone up from about 5.6 dB to 9 dB

Sync 17766 Kbps Downstream, 444 kbps Upstream.

Forget Annex M; Orange don't do it.

As I indicated earlier, you should expect syncs of 888 Kbps if the DLM puts you on Interleaved or about 1.2 Meg if on Fast Path. That's what I got once it got over the early 444 Kbps in the 1st week.

No use speaking to Orange tech support; they have no technical nous. After all it's BTw who run their BB. Best to write a formal letter requesting they sort it out.

FYI: My stats are now:
Status:
Configured Current
Line Status --- SHOWTIME
Link Type --- Fast Path
Operation Mode Automatic G992.5(ADSL2+)

Data Rate Information:
Stream Type Actual Data Rate
Upstream 1163 (Kbps.)
Downstream 20451 (Kbps.)

Defect/Failure Indication:
Operation Data Upstream Downstream
Noise Margin 6.6 dB 3.7 dB
Line Attenuation 13.0 dB 26.0 dB
Hence, it looks like both your Up Syncs are being damped by your very high Up NM.

tbh honest Ray I have no idea why there is so much noise on the upstream before the change over to WBC the Bt speed tester said my line was capable of 1028kbps which is about what i used to get on LLU but obviously when it reverted to IPStream it would only allow 448kbps it has to make me wonder if Orange/BT are some how controlling the noise margin to slow the upstream to save money, as i still get the same results from the master socket so no other devices can be causing the noise.

I have to add also I have noticed that my line is pretty stable as the router tends to stay connected for over 200 hours before it does any reset.
P.S
How do i get to see if I am on Interleaved or Fast Path on my router.

Don't think you can on the DGN1000, unless it has any TELNET i/f like other Netgears.

Or get Orange to send you their new BrightBox smile. They seem to send them out on any complaint about speed.

Orange agreed that my upstream was capped and requested BT to remove it.
And now I get what I expected. Hoorah!

ADSL Link
Downstream
Connection Speed 20488 Kbps
Line Attenuation 4.0 dB
Noise Margin 6.0 dB

Upstream
Connection Speed 1216 Kbps
Line Attenuation 1.5 dB
Noise Margin 5.9 dB

A big thanks to the Orange UK team (level 2)!

Now if Orange would only get shot of the India level 1 help desk...
