Brightbox constantly drops connection

[link to this post]

Hi All,

First post so please be gentle.

I have been a customer of Orange for quite a few years. I found the Livebox not good but bearable because it gave me free calls on the second line, but now this has ended I have gone with a Brightbox (and Vonage for the second line).

I find that the Brightbox drops the connection every few hours (as did the livebox). The main annoyance though is that after dropping the connection it never re-connects itself (the green internet light just flashes) and I have to switch the box off and on to get it to reconnect.

Now it may be that my phone wiring in my house is not the best but I have reverted to my ancient 2Wire router which works fine. It does occasionally re-sync but it will always reconnect itself afterwards.

Please could some clever person tell me if there is a way to get the Brightbox to automatically reconnect ?

Does anyone else have this problem ?

Cheers,
Rob

Stats look OK, no errors, but running a bit slow. But it's only been synced for 3 mins. Can you let run for a few hours/ a day and post same stats?

You are only on ADSL Max. What exchange are you on?

Is Advanced Settings/ Broadband Settings/ Connection Type = "Always Connected"?

Yes, Connection Type = "Always Connected".

I will run it for a few hours (overnight) & get back to you.

I am out in the sticks with a stone-age exchange. The max speed I ever got was about 3Mb/s but it's usually about 1.5Mb/s (It makes me smile when I see people complaining they are only getting10Mb/s!)

My Bright Box router automatically reconnects the broadband and I have just re-tested it by disconnecting the DSL line from the router, I then reconnect it and the router automatically connects to the Internet, it must be your line problem...

...and my BT 2Wire 2700HGV router also automatically reconnects. wink

If you have extension sockets have you disconnected the bell wire number 3 at the NTE5 master socket?

Thanks for the info E7er.
I have disconnected the bell wire.

Without having to re-wire the house I think I will just have to bin my Brightbox and stick with the trusty 2Wire.

Dunno if it's causing the dropouts, but you have very many errors on that line.

Sounds like a noisy line issue. Try running from the test socket. Swap filters? Remove ring wire?

Try the BT Quiet Line Test (17070 Opt2) with router disconned. Any noise, it's a voice fault.

Donít bin the Bright Box router use it as the wireless access point!

The 2Wire is the most stable router I know of for hanging onto a long DSL line.
I have two 2Wire 2700HGV routers BT Business Hub V1 and V2, have flashed the V1 with SBC firmware for the 400mW wireless power. I donít set it above power 6. I find 6 is about equal to my 3COM 3CRWDR101A-75 router which is a powerful wireless router. wink
