So Orange Email will close on 31 May 2017 How come other ISP's still provide service for old email addresses and EE do not, can we get an EE email address then? I like my (orangehome.co.uk) email address.

Can you not buy your own domain and get email that way?

completly non isp reliant then so you can switch isps and not worry about losing emails.

Originally on <n>ildram Broadband Pro (2mb)

then - Orange - Virgin - Sky LLU - EE
Now - BT Infinity 1

Thanks for the warning.

I have started to follow this up.

I have managed to do the initial setting up on GMail, username, password etc.

Be wary, Transfers of existing emails can only be done from the existing orange/freeserve/fsmail etc Inbox.

But that also empties that inbox - possibly the Archive selection should be made.

--------------

I can login to the new GMail Account - but so far have not been able to access the actual email part, due to a cluttered collection of guides etc for just about everything else.

Has anyone else been through the process and can help?

[re: XRaySpeX] [link to this post]

I did that, including extracting the detailed pages, editing those to include the required personal inputs etc, before diving in to the actual process.

========

In the short period after posting, I have found that the way to access the plain email is to click on the large red "M" in the top , icons, line of the first page "My Account".

I had also sent a Test Message from my lady-wifes email account to my freeserve account, with the already emptied in--box ("up to 2 days delay")

Checking on my freeserve account, that Test Message showed up, very lonely because of the I disappearance of the older ones.

I then went back in to gmail, including clicking "M" to find that the Test Message was already moved over.

Returning to Freeserve, the Test Message had disappeared.

So it looks as though I will have to basically operate on GMail generally right from now - what is not what I was expecting.

Now to work out a way of moving over my historic mail by playing about with the Inboxes.

You can't get/keep an EE email domain but orangehome.me.uk is available for £1.19 for the 1st year, then £8.39.

Transfers of existing emails can only be done from the existing orange/freeserve/fsmail etc Inbox.
You can move contents of other folders to Inbox.

But BEWARE, any sent items cannot be read by GMail even if 1st moved to Inbox as they are not seen by POP3 as proper emails. They may only be transferred by forwarding them 1-by-1.

Thanks, XraySpex

In this day and age, you would think that moving the whole lot plus Contacts, Groups etc could be made much simpler, including subsequent compatibility for "Reading" etc.

I did go part-way towards preparing the transfer of my EE SENT collection, by moving the original EE INBOX collection in to a new isolating group; then finding that whilst they appeared in the new GMail group as intended; but also remained in the GMail INBOX, probably some form of Tagging or such-like.

To allow my EE SENT Box to land in an empty GMail INBOX, I deleted all of the contents of the GM INBOX - to find that it also deleted all the copies in GM Isolating Group as well.

At least the UNDO facility worked.

So it looks as though I will have to resort to the one-by-one route, although it offers a good opportunity of checking whether many are worth retaining.

Sorry, I don't understand you. Are these "collections" & "groups" folders in Orange Webmail?

Are you saying that you managed to get your Orange Sent Items over to GMail, the GMail INBOX? Or is this just your naming of Orange Webmail folders by their intended destination?

No, it's the "Leave a copy of the retrieved message on the server" that should be ticked.

My Step 2 of the GMail Import was diff from the EE's video:
Step 2: Import options

Select the import options for XRay@SpeX.freeserve.co.uk:

X Import mail
X Leave a copy of the retrieved message on the server
o Archive incoming messages (Skip the Inbox)
o Add label to all imported mail:

Taking other sites such as TBB, Samknows, Find My Past etc, which use e-mail addresses as Usernames, do these have to be changed?

Thanks for the help and advice.

Basically I have now set up on gmail for both myself and the separate one for my lady-wife, transferred over those older e-mails that I want to keep - the Forwarding went faster than I had expected.

Today, I sent out Blind-copy to our respective Contacts, with the Undeliverable ones being useful for cutting down the new Gmail Contacts Lists.

Still got a few sites where I have to change my email Address inside them, as opposed to Username.

-------------

Working through the Contacts Lists gave me some idea of how many still have to go through the exercise, to cover those closures.

Have bought a domain & email hosting from 1&1 two days ago . Have tested it during their 30 day free trial period and it seems to do everything I want, particularly multiple email addys, a la Orange, which I couldn't do on GMail etc.

Now busy changing my (exclusive) email addys at the sites I'm registered at. Am now finding quite a few that no longer exist & so I can scrub their records (welcome emails).

Ah, OK, you don't get your own domain & therefore multiple email addys, which is what I was after. So I'm paying 1&1 about £15 pa for one.

You only get 1 email addy & so is no diff from free GMail etc.

Your own domain name and hosting to have numerous email accounts would cost you around 75pw from someone like https://www.vidahost.com/web-hosting/pricing#plans

You would then not be at the mercy of ever losing your email address[es] and can manage your email accounts at ease. Helpful staff that speak English available 24 hours should you need them. This is by far the most sensible option to take rather than opting for a free, web based, email client.

If you do become a Gmail user, or know someone who is, I would recommend reading this web page:
http://www.datastore365.co.uk/gmail-cyber-attack-how...

So choose wisely!

That's £3 per month = £36 per year. That's dear!

I'm paying about £15 / year this year & £22 / year in following years from 1&1 for the same thing. The email hosting is actually £1.19 per month.

I don't think that the free email addy that E7er got from 1&1 is just Webmail; it is POP3'able too.

Pay a year up front, then it's £29 pa. But then, are we comparing like for like? What storage quota do you get with 1&1? And does the hosting give you the option to have a web site?

No but 1&1 suits me to the 'T':
  • Storage: Same = 2GB.
  • Mailboxes: Only 1 with 1&1 but it's all I need as it takes multiple aliases.
  • Website: I have no need for my own.

Each to his own with your domain and hosting fees reflecting your choice/limitations. Should readers to this thread require more than a clone to your setup, then obviously the hosting fees will be marginally higher than the £21 pa you are paying.

Your email of Fri 24-Feb-17 didn't convey the theme now presented, only to say the suggestion I put forward was expensive. I only sought to determine if we were comparing like with like. It turns out that each had different attributes with a resultant difference in price. Are we not permitted to clear up this confusion? Noting was taken out of context nor was there the slightest hint of sarcasm.

Bearing in mind that your warning of the closure of the various EE e-mail servers was just over a month back, there are still no warnings on the most obvious location - the Login Screens.

I have just checked both Freeserve and FSMail.

Freeserve is particularly remiss in that it still invites New Users to sign up, as well as Existing Users.

Thus both Servers appear "normal", without the scheduled closures on 31st May 2017 being mentioned.

-------------------

Changing my e-mail address over the range of sites I access and expect e-mails from, has ranged from easy, to apparently impossible in a few cases.

It was however relatively easy informing my Contacts, sending out a suitable message, using the BCC (Blind Copy Circulation) addressing, so that it did not reveal my range of contacts to anyone.

In a couple of cases, the contacts came back asking what my new address is, not realising that it had been sent from that new address, although stated. So it may be advisable to include the new address in the body text, if using the same method.

At last, an e-mail from EE yesterday, 16th March 2017, that the "Orange" e-mail servers will be closing totally on 31st May 2017.

---

That e-mail in itself, is very poor, as it only states "Orange", so if one is not aware of the extended range of addresses, one could think that it did not apply to such as myself on "Freeserve" etc.

------------------

It is only if one follows up that a list of NINE Servers is given, with only TWO including "Orange"-

"
The addresses affected by the closure are:

Orange.net
Orangehome.co.uk
Wanadoo.co.uk
Freeserve.co.uk
Fsbusiness.co.uk
Fslife.co.uk
Fsmail.net
Fsworld.co.uk
Fsnet.co.uk
"

Interesting that a Telecommunications company can not Tell a Communication in a more Telling and Communicative manner!

-------------------

Anyone having to carry out this exercise may find the "Workshops" feature in Computeractive, Issue 497, 15 - 28 March 2017, of use, to get a comprehensive list of sites that may have to be accessed.

In reply to a post by eckiedoo:
Changing my e-mail address over the range of sites I access and expect e-mails from, has ranged from easy, to apparently impossible in a few cases.

It was however relatively easy informing my Contacts, sending out a suitable message, using the BCC (Blind Copy Circulation) addressing, so that it did not reveal my range of contacts to anyone.

In a couple of cases, the contacts came back asking what my new address is, not realising that it had been sent from that new address, although stated. So it may be advisable to include the new address in the body text, if using the same method.
Thank you for that information, I had not heard of it before BCC (Blind Copy Circulation) addressing.
BCC (Blind Copy Circulation) addressing, can also be used with "Microsoft Windows Live Mail".

if I am honest, I am surprised it lasted so long. It was around when I worked at Orange which was 2002

Edit, have you see the page at http://ee.co.uk/orange ?

For me it just shows "Range E-mail is Losing"!1 the graphic is messed up lol!

BCC is available in all mail clients, even in Orange Webmail.

If you don't see it in the headers of the email you're writing just click on To: or CC: & it allow you to put any contact into any type of recipient.

Just checked both EE Accounts today.

With both, you have to actually SIGN IN, before any warning of Imminent Closure appears.

Particularly ironic for the Freeserve Account, as it still invites one to Set Up a NEW ACCOUNT.

I have not tried following that through in detail; but it could be that it allows you to do so, then Sign In for first conventional use, only to be told that it is CLOSING!

I certainly think that the New Account Invitation should have disappeared very early on.

Same on login page for BB Member's Centre @ https://web.orange.co.uk/r/login/ .

Last time I looked, within last month, you could still create a new free-to-anyone FSMail.net Webmail from outside the EE BB network, but not on that page & I now forget which.

Having just received a notification from a colleague who is going through the same exercise, I noted that he did not use the BCC Addressing facility; and also sent his Notification from his OLD EE Address, rather than his NEW ADDRESS, making it messier to add his New Address to my Contacts List.

You can get an EE account. I went to some price comparison sites and found offers for one. So, after much trouble (none of the EE Helplines was working) I got a loyalty rate EE mail account on exactly the same terms as my Orange one - well, better in fact if you make international calls . My only problem is that I can't find out about the new address: what format and how to inform them. Neither do I know how to let all my Contacts know when Orange withdraws. Nor what settings to use for my MS Office Outlook account!

It's impossible to get an EE email account. EE retain all their email domains & won't be releasing them to anybody any time soon; That's why you can't find out about the new address format. Someone's lying to you?

I'll come back to you later on how to transfer your contacts.

What domain is your email addy on (the bit after your name)?

I have agreed a contract with EE; it starts 18th April. I did it because until this point I've been very satisfied with the various incarnations of Orange and we also have our landline with them. I discovered the contracts were available when I checked out the price comparison sites.
I have tried all the options for transferring Contacts but if you know something new I will be grateful.
I now have another problem. Yesterday, in my attempt to add Gmail to my Outlook account I have made Outlook unloadable except in safe mode. I thought I'd fixed it yesterday but at least yesterday all my emails were in there and my address book – today they’re not! I can import the latter and the emails that were moved from Orange to Gmail have downloaded, but none of those saved to folders in my Inbox. I did wonder if I can re-install, though that won’t get my emails back! Also, yesterday one of the options offered was to have Outlook repaired, and that involved reconfiguring but still didn’t solve the problem.
I also can't add Gmail to my account in spite of getting the settings from them.

What Outlook a/c? You mean the Outlook email client program on your PC?

You need to set it up using GMail POP3 Configuration instructions.

You cannot transfer contents of other folders to Gmail or Outlook mail client w/out 1st moving them to the Innox. POP3 only sees the Inbox.

Yea, I mean the client app. Actually I had a very lengthy chat with Microsoft this morning at what proved to be the end of which I was told to close Outlook and re-open it. As I expected, the little Gmail popup still showed but this time, when I clicked 'Yes' the app was promptly loaded unchanged by my shenanigans. I've yet to see if that will happen next time. Nothing he suggested or that I did - it just worked.
Incidentally, I also discovered that Gmail is installed as an Outlook account correctly and probably isn't working as it's not yet marked as the default account. In the meantime, the little Gmail popup keeps on popping up from time to time.
Do you know if I have to allow access to less secure apps for Outlook to work?

An email a/c within Outlook doesn't need to be the default a/c to be accessed. It just needs to be included in your Send/Receive Group.

What little Gmail popup? Coming from Outlook? You mean the Usernam/pwd box?

You do need to allow access to less secure apps in GMail. It would seem that Google doesn't trust MS.

For all Orange email domains barring FSMail.net you need to follow How to export contacts from your Orange Email account.

You can only transfer your contacts from Orange to GMail by getting Orange Webmail to generate a .CSV file & importing that file into GMail Contacts.

There is no "Export Contacts" in FSMail.net. Have a look at this handy guide on How to create edit csv files on the Microsoft support pages to see how you can manually construct a .CSV file that can be imported into your GMail contacts.

The multiple email addys from 1 mailbox had a certain attraction & allowed filtering of spam from leaked sites. Still I can now do the same with my own domain.

Ads? never seen an ad in all the 10 years I've been on Gmail. As for "who knows what they do with your emails" - who cares! Paranoia is never fruitful, let em sift my email if they like - do you know HOW many Gmail users there are, and HOW much computing power and money it would take for them to parse EVERY SINGLE EMAIL from EVERY SINGLE user? They are a business, they may not be ethical on a few fronts, but they're not idiots and, to be honest, I don't think they could care less what your Aunt Gertrude is bringing to the family wedding, or what you wrote or bought on eBay. They parse the text to find words to better create analytics of what people are buying - LET EM - life's too short to care or be paranoid. I listen to Steve Gibson's (GRC, "Shields Up", "SpinRite" author and maintainer) AMAZING "Security Now" podcast every week @ http://twit.tv - been listening for 3 years now, he's been in the security business for MANY decades, and if he thought there was any serious concerns re Google, he ain't shy about saying so IMMEDIATELY.

How do you know what ANY OTHER, less well known email provider is doing with your email info? You don't. At least Google are GIGANTIC, high profile and VERY VERY visible - any serious intrusions of privacy would be coming to light FAR quicker than some weird, obscure ISP email service, available only to one ISP's customers and in one specific country.

The whole myth of "privacy" is precisely that. Of all the companies I would trust with my data, there's only ONE I *truly* trust and for whom I feel reputation, ethics and security are PARAMOUNT - Apple.

I'd trust Google over EE and their mechanism for being able to get into my Bright Box (which I also don't care about, by the way - let them) WAY more. NO ONE except the people doing the snooping, know about it, there's no pretense to be made with conspiracy theories, and no progress to be made with them, either, it's all just time wasted that can be FAR FAR better utilised smile

Okay, you can remove your tin foil flat cap now, the satellite has passed over.

Not from Webmail. It only has individual forwarding.

Had you kept your emails on your PC using an email client & sent from that you would have had this facility.
