I'll give a bit of background then.
Theres 2 game modes, one is combat mode, which is more straight up fps-sy the other is "classic"
Combat mode: you either go alien or human
If you go human you start out as a stock marine, you kill and earn points, depending what you kill i.e basic alien "skulk" gets you a bit of exp, killing the rhino thing "onos" gets you more obviously. From the points you can buy gun upgrades, armour upgrades etc.
Aliens you start off and you are a basic skulk then you evolve into other alien creatures like the gorge (basically like a caretaker), fade (big tall black things built for stealth and fast attacks), onos (big rhino thing), etc then you chose other other abilities and stuff etc, you get the idea.
Classic mode is more strategy based, aliens start with one hive, humans get a command center in which a person goes commander and for them the game is like an rts, assigning players to locations getting them to build stuff etc, for players the commander researches upgrades and drops them etc, the aim is to take down the alien hive(s).
For aliens they start with one hive and chose one of the upgrade towers, theres one which grants cloaking, etc, hives also generate points so individual players can evolve like in combat mode (but more restricted to what upgrade towers and hives are up), etc.
