What Sony needs to do with the Playstation 4

[link to this post]

For a start of improve the download time spent downloading games/demos ect and get it up to par with what Microsoft offers.

Example......

Downloading any game takes about 4 times as long as it does downloading the same size file from xbox live, same connection for both consoles [wired Ethernet] yet the sony download is a crawl.

Then not only that we have to go through a install procedure which in all honesty is another joke, not only that it takes forever to do this and the bigger the game the longer the tedious wait to play it.

Lets take Infamous 2 for example........15 gig in size and about a 3 hour download on the Sony Network regardless of how fast your connection speed is........Mine is 12 meg download speed so its not slow.

Then having waited on this i then go through the install procedure which takes........Wait for it........30 minutes.

Defiantly need some work in this department for sure because its dead boring and it does not have to be this way if Microsoft don't have the same issues.

Totally agree that needs fixing, I'm surprised it hasn't been fixed on the PS3...

There is no need to "install" on a console ... perhaps uncompress but that should be quick, especially if there was a hardware decoder and uncompressing could be done in chunks as the file downloads.

I'd really like to see "Other OS" support make a return for the PS4.

Whatever happens unless the PS4 is 4K-ready I can't see the point, its life would be too short and there would be little noticeable improvement in graphics.

I agree downloading and installing are pathetic.

I hope they don't make the PS4 in Japan.
I don't want a radioactive games machine in my living room thanks

To be fair, I think the download speeds seemed pretty reasonable with the PS3 - I just found myself downloading more data full stop on the PS3 versus the 360. In your example:

15GB / 3 hours = 5GB/ hour = 1456KB/s = 11.65Mbps - sounds dead on for a 12Mbps broadband connection. That's not Sony slowing you down, that's as fast as your broadband is able to download 15GB. 15GB is a lot of data, hence my argument above.

Don't know how you come to that conclusion as I have already stated I could download the same size file or game demo and on the Xbox live service it will be 4 times as quick.

But I take your point, but what about the stupid waiting times in the install procedure that you have to go through with anything downloaded from PSN.

No need for it to be quite honest, not only is there no need but why does it take so dam long to install

It's simple mathematics, a 12Mbps connection cannot go any faster than that. If you're downloading "more data" in that period of time then one of two things is happening. Either:

- The xbox 360 is giving you the uncompressed size after the data has been extracted and installed, and not the actual download size
- The xbox 360 download size figure is plain wrong.

The installation times on the PS3 are annoying however, I will definitely grant you that.

It does sound about right mate. I do it roughly which gets you near enough.

Your 12mbps less overheads, is probably 11ish.

11mbps divided by 8 to change to MB = 1.375MB

Multiply by 60 secs then 60 mins 1.375 x 60 x 60 = 4950MB

4950MB divided by 1000 = 4.95 GB

4.95 GB x 3 hours = 14.85GB

He used the factors of 8 and got it spot on. I'm too lazy for that. wink

Lazy would be to google it:-

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=15GB+%2F+11Mbps

That's the way I normally do my sums.

*edit* didn't need most of the url I pasted the first time.

I understand the maths and what he is talking about mate and dont dispute what he is saying regarding my download speeds.

But and this is the BIG BUT.......Why then does the xbox live service download the same game demo 4 times as fast.

Dead Space 3 demo is a prime example.........8 minutes on Xbox live
and 22 minutes if not more on PSN...............Thats what I'm talking about .

Fair enough if the xbox is giving me what you say,so why don't the Playstation 3 service do exactly the same because its way better as I'm sick of starring at a download and install screen on the playstation.

Be a laugh and plenty of red faces if come the 20th Feb Sony announces the Wonder-book 2 tongue and there is no sign of a Playstation 4.

One thing that will make me happy is the fact that Sony [rumours] release the Playstation 4 in Japan and USA end of 2013 and Europe has to wait until March 2014.

Then what i want is Microsoft to jump on board a week later and announce a worldwide release of there new xbox at the end of 2013 and possibly even before Sony ships any Playstation's 4s.

Now that will be the kick in the backside Sony will deserve for constantly treating Europe like second class citizens time and time again.

If the PS4 is released with PS1/2/3 BC and all PS1/2/3 games on PSN available to download I would buy it. Also needs to be able to output to a vga monitor and pc soundcard.

I want a load of PS1/2 games but I dont want to buy multiple consoles to play them on.

I understand what you saying but i struggle to understand why people who buy next generation consoles want to play older retro games.

Why bother in the first place in a new next generation console if you want to play Playstation 1 games, never understood why people rave about games on the psn store that are 12 years old if not more, this is not what a next generation leap should be about,it should be about brilliant ,amazing new games on the store that use the machines capabilities and not games from a decade ago.

Personally i don't give a dam if it don't play Playstation 3 games from a year or so back because i have already played them and have very little interest.

Obviously with the likes of COD and the online they will have to implement something and i don't think the next P3 will not play P3 games not that I'm bothered.

The only time it would bother me and its not going to happen is if they released games like the Last of Us in june and come the end of the year this did not work on a new console, with so many new games on the horizon then it will have to have backward compatibility and it would be foolish to release anything that is not.

Im more concerned with there ambition and rumours about trying to do away with the second hand games market and trade in of games.
