Lets Talk Steam Machines ........Again

[link to this post]

As you know i may well end up with one of these but the amount of people producing and developing units is staggering and its not a easy choice and can be a tad confusing given the shear amount of units and price points.

Obviously Timey isn't looking for a start up unit and if and when i do buy one then its going to be of the higher spec thats for sure.

So lets start with the Alienware steam machines and people can post others as they see fit to do so.

I just want one that sits connected to my Tv and I'm not wanting to stream things from my Mac just use this Steam machine similar to a console.

Here are the 4 Steam Machines from Alienware

No prizes for guessing which one i would buy either crazy

Not sure if i would go for one of these or another from the 100s of companies doing them.

Certainly won't be jumping in as per usual thats for sure ?

Remember these units are available come November 10.

timey, sadly I think those are a no go, 2gig of vram in 2015 is a bit of a stretch, e.g. the ps4 has 8 gig of vram and current nvidia/amd mainstream cards have at least 3.5gig gig. I would wait to see if they release updated models in 2016.

This is based on the assumption you will be buying AAA 2015+ games.

Mate buy or build a normal machine then have steam os installed, you're gonna pay alot of money for something that you're likely to be very disappointed in otherwise!!

here you go mate this one seems ok.

http://www.scan.co.uk/3xs/configurator/steam-machine...

Not sure if that link works tho to take you direct to model.

the model 3XS ST15

Its a overclocked desktop 970 in there.

an example of how the industry has moved.

Thats got a inferior processor as opposed to the i7 on the alienware,a smaller hard drive and a worse graphic card matey wink

Oh and did i mention 10/12 years back i bought a 3DX system from scan custom built at around £2000 and it was the biggest piece of junk i had ever owned and within mere months was struggling to play even basic games at high frame rates.

Scan is probably the last place i would visit for a custom built PC or steam machine.

Was you looking at the top end price of the Alienware steam machine and not the basic one.

It's a customised 860m gpu in that top end steam machine you're looking at btw mate so not an inferior graphics card at all!!

Here's a review of that Dell/Alienware rig and although the guy has good things to say about it he's not exactly playing today's AAA titles on it.

IMHO if I were you I'd stick to the PS4 or have a custom pc built and dual boot windows 10 and steam os because that machine just won't cut it when it comes to maxing out or even running at very high on todays games!!
