Horizon: Zero Dawn

[link to this post]

Wow...

I've created a very short clip without spoilers, from the very beginnng of the game, just to show you what it really looks like.

This is PS4 Pro footage set by default to favour resolution, rendering at 2160p, then automatically supersampling down to my 1080 TV. Once realising that was the default setting, I have since set it to favour performance, plus extra visual effects. It looks literally no different to me other than a few lighting effects, so I'm guessing that it will look amazing on the standard PS4 too.

If you liked Tomb Raider, this will blow you [and it] away.

Had a go on this at my mates house on Monday, The tutorial was a little too long for my liking but the graphics were very very nice and the game play was very good as well.
From what I saw looked like another very good Playstation exclusive title.

I'm addicted. It's Far Cry 4 does Red Dead Redemption with dinosaurs. smile

If you're being really picky you could say that that it feels slightly rushed out the door, with some of the transitions from cutscene in/out of gameplay feeling a little clunky every now and then; not to mention the water rabbit I met tonight... grin

But it's completely forgiveable when the level of detail is so phenomenal; those vistas! It's so immersive, but then I always liked the premise. Machines taking over the world has been done to death. But machine dinosaurs? What's not to like.

Really? I didn't think it was very long. A lot of cutscenes setting up the characters if that's what you mean, but I enjoyed it. As "The Last of Us" showed with it's prologue, if you can hook people into the characters rather than "the story", right from the get go, they invest in it for the duration.

Compared to the towers in Far Cry 4 and Dying Light, opening the map is a lot more challenging in this game. Nothing wrong with the tower approach, I enjoyed it in both those games, Far Cry particularly. But climbing these "Tallnecks" takes planning, patience, and then timing of execution.

This definitely wasn't my first attempt!

Yeah just a lot of cut scenes and it was all a little too slow for my liking like when you first scan the enemy movements etc.
When the game properly starts it was a great game.
"The Last of Us" prologue was about as good as it got for me, There wasn't really much to do in it but the story was amazing, Didn't really think much of the people in this one TBH.

I think it will be fine, just with a few less effects. Perhaps Jorkilla can post a little exert for you, but I think it will hold up well.

There is the odd pop in and [very, very] rare judder, but it has only happened in random areas. Some of the very best looking areas I've seen in a game, stuffed with detail and lighting, are absolutely rock solid, even amidst a huge battle with numerous dinosaurs. That's why I posited earlier that it might have been rushed out the door, towards the end of an obviously ambitious design effort.

Fighting the "machine" equivalent of a pterodactyl and sabre tooth tiger at the same time, is really difficult, but however many times you die, beating them feels properly doable because the weapons are so intuitive. Particularly with the concentration skill enabled to slow down time when you need to.

So as of last night, I'm 29:39:39 hrs in, and 29.72% progress.

I am doing a lot of the side missions which obviously impacts on that, but still a lot of map left to see, half of the main story still to complete, and a fair few dinosaurs still to meet.

the boost mode is for games which have no added support for the pro, horizon has native support so I expect will make no difference.

I didn't even realise 4.50 had landed until reading this! Did it in rest mode without me noticing. smile

Jack Septic Eye didn't think it did much, but I'll try it just out of interest. Then I'll try Project Cars which is supposed to benefit greatly.

did you get any manual or anything in your game?

My copy from shopto.net

No shrinkwrap on case
Scratches on disc
No manual or leaflets but is holders in the case to hold them.

Looks like they sold a return to me as new. frown

I would deffo message them about it.

I've never got a new game without shrinkwrap (or at least a seal although this is XB)

I don't remember the last time a game HAD a manual in the case so I wouldn't expect a manual at all, I do get leaflets like season pass available etc in it tho.

The shrinkwrap and leaflets missing seem a little odd to me

well they wouldnt send me the free keyring (new offer started 2 days after I ordered), given I am unhappy with the packaging I have done a new order and arranged to return/cancel this order. So I get a new copy of the game and the keyring, also the new price is £3 cheaper as well.
