Routers and DSLAMs

[link to this post]

It seems that one of the tricks to getting a good BB connection is to match the router to the DSLAM at the exchange.

Does anyone know if there is a table somewhere with a list of which exchange uses which DSLAM and what would be the best router for that DSLAM? I've tried Google but nothing comes up.

If nothing exists it might be a useful exercise for thinkBB to collate exchange DSLAM information from users. If users don't have the information, maybe Mr Saffron could find out....

many routers tell you the DSLAM chipset, especially if you get the stats from a command line interface and they are tabulated.

At http://shastademo.2wire.com/rgw3-1/rgw/3-1/content/management/link_summary.html you can see the DSLAM identified.

I have used Prodigy Network in the past and it used to show you how many DSLAM's were in your exchange along with how many ports were free, etc, but this has now been withdrawn

I think that this data is commercially sensitive!

Assuming, that is, BT can even remember which DSLAM they installed where, and recorded that information.

they all seem to have unique reference numbers etc when the Prodigy data was available, as one would expect for ordering spares etc.

One would hope BT are recording the model number, version and serial number.
I just have visions of the same kind of traceability that Dell show when you type your service tag in, and it comes back with "well, this is what we had in the parts bin on the day we made your PC, but we can't tell you which one of five graphics cards we actually fitted to your machine".

yeah, that Dell thing sucks - "one of the five drivers below is required for your PC to work with Vista, over to you"

Well that says that the Country is F (France?) and the vendor is DLCB (?). However it also tells me the protocol is T1.413 rather than the G.Dmt that I'm actually using so how accurate it is I have no idea.

T1.413 is G.DMT

that was simply an illustration of what routers will tell you. The chipset vendors have codes like DLCB TSTC ALCB etc

TSTC = Texas Instruments - matches Netgear 834(G) but not GT.
ALCB = Alcatel also use TMMB (Thomson ?)
BDCM = Broadcom
