BT - Dodgy marketing?

[link to this post]

I had a letter from BT this morning that started as follows:

"TISCALI CHIEF PLOTS SELL-OFF
We can understand why you're wondering what might happen to your Tiscali broadband service. Because no one really knows the answer just yet, it could be a good time to look at an alternative broadband service". It then goes on to tell you all about the BT service.

I guess their info on me is a bit out of date anyway as I'm not with Tiscali but was with Pipex until a few months ago. But does anyone think this is a slightly bad way for BT to be going about things, surely they are abusing their position as they have information about which ISPs everyone is using, where as other competitors wouldn't have?

Don't get me wrong I have no love for Tiscali and am glad I moved on, but this seems a bit of a dodgy way to go about marketing.

My partner got the same letter yesterday, she migrated from Pipex about 3 weeks ago. I have been getting emails from BT Broadband for about 2 months and I migrated from Pipex about 5 months ago. The only way that BT would know my email address is because I gave it to them for my online phone billing. I think the whole thing as a bit cheeky.

This doesn't sound that different from dodgy burglar alarm salesmen, calling at an old lady's door, and scaring her (with stories about masked intruders) into parting with her life savings.

I wonder how BT would feel, if all the LLU providers sent out letters saying "BT will mess around with your internet connection, causing you to get a lower speed than is possible, so you'd better switch to us".

Pipex are just as bad. Yesterday my company received a letter that looked like a job application, but it later became clear that the person applying for a job was one of the business sales reps from Pipex ! Pipex wanted to join my company and take over my business broadband. There is only one obstacle to this - hell would have to freeze over first !

Home ADSL: Sky Max
Business ADSL: ZeN Office 8000

I don't have a scanner but I've taken a picture with my camera phone instead, seems to have come out okay and is readable.

My hunch is that you used to be a BT Broadband customer and moved to Pipex?

I've never been a BT Broadband customer. Started with Virgin, then Pipex and now ADSL24
