Info on my exchange?

[link to this post]
Hey all, out of interest I would like to get some stats about my exchange. Like fast the backbone is, whether it still piggy backs off a neighbouring ADSL exchange and how many ADSL lines it can support. I know its unbundled as I am with BE getting 17mbits a second, but I am just curious about how big the backbone is mainly smile

The area code is 01487 SOMERSHAM

Good luck getting any of that information. It's properietary and Be won't want you to know laugh

I did ask about congestion on their support forums a couple of weeks ago though and was told my exchange had a 1Gb backhaul link. Seemed a bit high tbh given we're a small town.

High by BT standards, yes.

With Be* / O2 groups of exchanges are linked together and backhaul is provided to a particular of exchanges via a hub exchange / aggregation point.

In the case of my exchange, Highams Park (E17). The aggregation point is Barking which then connects into Be*'s wider network commonly called the London ring. This I believe is a 10Gb link.

All aggregation points are then connected via larger bandwidth pipes to the London ring i.e there are links from Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield etc into the London ring.

This is all pretty much guesswork on my part, because as Andrue has said Be* give very little detail on their network topology and size of various links, as this information is commercially sensitive. However, having been with Be* for over 3 years, I've managed to pick up / glean bits of information here and there from information Be* staff including management have posted on the official Be* forum.

The good news is that there is currently no congestion on the network that I'm aware of.

Be's network at least *was* a total mess and probably still is to an extent. It grew somewhat 'organically' wink

As far as exchanges go, most will be on 1Gbps with moves to 10Gbps when traffic requires it. Some exchanges will be on 10Gbps because they carry traffic for multiple other exchanges as well as their own.

Backhauls will be Daisy Chains mostly with a very few rings and the occasional spur, like a daisy chain but without the daisy, going to an aggregation point.

Depends. Exchanges moved off the ATM network will for the most part have multiple GigE backhaul if required.

Remember that BT are limited as to how much backhaul they can use on each MSAN by the now horribly outdated and always pointless Margin Squeeze Test. BT could backhaul most exchanges with 10GbE, given that it's BT's fibre Be et al will largely be using for their Gig and 10G backhauls.

aren't most of the Openreach BES circuits 100M as opposed to 1G ? Can't remember where I saw it but a chart suggested this was the case. Be might be different but Talk Talk def use 100M for up to 3000 customers.

It's better than it was and there is some better resiliency and redundancy built in now

Not so much reliant on BT for backhaul at least these days

It certainly seemd high to me.

Less than 7,000 premises. Market 3 exchange. How many customers does Be have here? I know we have full speed 24/7/365 but does it really need 1Gb for that?
