2mbps by 2012 question!!!!!

[link to this post]
Hi guys,

I have a question regarding the 2mbps by 2012 target.

My exchange serves around 1,336 lines (more than 3 villiages). 1 or more of the villiages are unable to get at least 2mbps because they are more than 2.8 miles as the crow flies.

Does this mean that to get them to 2mbps, BT will upgrade our exchange to ADSL2+.etc because it offers a larger speed for longer lines?

What else would they do because erecting another telephone exchange down there would be both expensive and pointless because installing 21CN on our current exchange would mean more people benefit from it.

Exchange - Nether Stowey (Villiages being served - Nether Stowey, Over Stowey, Fiddington & Stogursey. Some farmers aswell)

My Broadband Speed Test

Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 14.0 db 10.0 db

I'm not sure where you got that idea from ? In general, ADSL2+ only benefits shorter lines (i.e. ones where the sync speed is 5Mbps or higher).

Who has said that the 2Mbps USC will be down to BT to implement.

Any firm that bids for the contract might get the job in your area, i.e. it could be a wireless solution.

ADSL2+ on longer lines pretty much behaves as ADSL, a small number getting 1.8Mbps might manage 2.2Mbps, but it is not going to triple long line speeds.

I agree, simply put there will be areas NOBODY be it BT, Virgin or whoever will want to spend money, time and work on. Which throws the whole idea everyone will get 2Mb right down the toilet.

So you think that ALL firms will ignore the pot of £200 million that is to address the USC?

I'd imagine £200 million in chicken feed compared to not only the initial outlay required, but the ongoing maintenance needed.

I guess we should not bother, certainly that is the impression I get from a few people, i.e. all is woe

There's a simple solution. Charge the same for market 2/3 exchanges as market 1.

Same low price I assume you mean? As most would not want a price rise.

In which case if lower is your option and costs are higher to provide service to Market 1 type exchanges, what incentive is there to encourage BT to roll-out to these exchanges.
