Faceplate riddle

[link to this post]

Not sure where to begin with this question, but it’s really got me confused.

We have had 2 new BT lines fitted to our office. Both terminate in the later type NTE5A with the ring inductor on the detachable plate. We ordered Office 40GB 21CN Broadband from Xilo on both these lines which are intended to provide a VOIP solution for the whole office.

We are using 2 DrayTek Vigor 120 modems connected via a Netgear SRX5308 load balancer. The modems are directly connected to the wall sockets.

When we came to connect the modems up we were unable to get any sync. Much swapping of cables etc followed but no joy. Before giving up we removed the faceplates and tried the modems in the test sockets. Both now showed sync and the internet was active on one line although with a very poor speed compared to the BT checker’s prediction (3Mbps compared to 15Mbps on the checker).

It transpired that BT had made an administrative error and cancelled one of the lines. We are currently waiting for this line to be reactivated.

As regards the “working” line, whilst we are used to the BT estimates being somewhat off this seems extremely far out, especially considering the distance to the exchange of 0.5km. (Appreciate that this doesn’t dictate the path of the line, but we’d surely only be looking at around 1Km).

Speed tests (i.e. speedtest.net) have shown the actual throughput to be running at 1Mbps down/0.4Mbps up.

Can anybody suggest:

• Why the connection will not work via the NTE5A faceplate and only the test socket ?
• Why the speed might be so low on the “working” line ?

Where might we be getting confused?

Just to clarify: there is no voice equipment connected and no extension cables.

What is the attenuation reported by the router?

First things first, can you post the stats from the router. SNR, Attenuation and sync speed for both downstream and upstream.

Have you tried connecting the faceplate from the other line (the one that isn't live yet) to the slow line? It could be a faulty faceplate.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Don't know how to obtain the stats from this set up. Could try connecting another router.

Have swapped the faceplates, and leads etc - both the same.

there was sync even on the non working line (no voice) but would not pass the faceplate.

are any wires connected to the removable part of the faceplate ?

what cabling is used to connect the modems to the NTE5s ?

might it be as simple as bad connection between the faceplate and the test socket - have a look at the conductors on the plug that is formed into the faceplate.

MaxDSL - goes as fast as it can and doesn't read the line checker first.

Telnet onto the Vigor and use 'adsl status'.

eta: or use the web interface http://192.168.2.1

Nothing else is connected to these lines whatsoever.

We are using BT431A to RJ11 Straight through not crossed. 4 cores in the cable pressume only two used.

Will attemt to get stats, but will be tommorow.

Many thanks

If you can open a ticket with us, we'll get that tested and see what information we get back from a line check.

Hi Matt

I was trying to assemble the three speedchecks that you requested using the BT Wholesale checker, it's proving difficult to get them at appropriate times. Should I persevere or open a ticket with you anyway?

Points raised by others:

Regarding the Vigor 120, the device is acting as a PPPoA to PPPoE bridge, i.e. it doesn't have it's own IP address, rather is passing the real external IP address straight through. I don't think its possible to telnet the device in this configuration ?

Both faceplates pass the line for voice i.e. pins 2 and 5 must be connected?

If you already have a ticket open, please just append that, as we may have already run those checks hence the reason for the speedtests.

If not, please open a new one.
