Weird IP Profiles

[link to this post]

There have been several reports of strange IP Profiles being reported by the BT speed tester. Figures that do not tally with the known table. The latest I know of is a sync of 6656kbps giving an IP Profile of 5872kbps.

It seems there is some trial running on a large number of the BT Wholesale MSANs, called "bRAS Quantification".

I get this from a post by a Plusnet rep in their Community Forum.
bRAS quantification is a change to the way BT assign IP profiles and is currrently applied to about about 40% of the ADSL2+ MSANs.

bRAS quantification will assign the proilfe a lot closer to the sync speed than at present and the profile will be applied instantly after a sync event, so no more waiting 72 hours for the DLM to pick up the new sync speed. As yet it's not fully implemented but believe it will be fully rolled out around August.

Good news if it is true.

That seems to be similar to the way the DLM operates on FTTC which (if you accept the necessity for the damn thing in the first place mad) seems to work quite well.

I'm feeling slightly more benevolent towards it than usual because it's just given me my fastpath back smile

The question is now that Openreach have shown it is possible, with the FTTC one, why couldn't Wholesale do it long ago.

I try not to answer questions about the actions/policies of any part of BT, for reasons I'll let you guess at wink

Sounds a step in the right direction!

Which is more than I can say about my Orange WBC connection frown , which is an example of these "strange" IP Profiles:
Your DSL Connection Rate :11972 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 888 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 10562 Kbps

In reply to a post by RobertoS:
"bRAS Quantification".

Sounds like a fancy way of saying "we got it wrong; Sky & BE got it right, so now we're scrapping IP profiles without the embarrassment of actually scrapping them" (maybe I've learned how to speak marketing BS after all).

They seen to be @ ~88% of sync, but ISP is using the standard profile.

Whether or not connected with a copper line repair, or even the trial, I don't know, but with drops the connection seems to recover instantly with no loss of speed or rise in margin target. This runs now 3dB and latest sync reported is 9003 with a 47dB attenuation.

Thanks for that info RoberoS.

It would seem to explain why my profile has been a little odd since the
middle of April, this year.

Examples:-

17th April 2011
Download speed achieved during the test was - 7386 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 2000-7150 Kbps.
Your DSL Connection Rate :8324 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 1113 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7344 Kbps.

5th May 2011
Download speed achieved during the test was - 9281 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 4000-21000 Kbps.
Your DSL Connection Rate :9487 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 1077 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 8369 Kbps

It has now even put me on "fastpath", something which has never happened before
on my exchange in the past.

At one point it even "took leave of it's senses" and dropped my SNR Margin to 3dB.

It didn't last for long (back to 6dB again now), but it was nice to
experience a profile well above my usual 7000-7500 for a few days.

MOre funnies there as well as the odd profile.

The actual speeds are higher than it. A few of those are cropping up as well, almost as though the IP Profile is being shown but not acted upon.
