21CN switchover and training period

[link to this post]

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7680 kbps 992 kbps
Line Attenuation 33.0 db 14.5 db
Noise Margin 6.0 db 11 db

My line was switched over to 21CN this morning. I believe im still on adsl1 as i did not request adsl2+, so its just the exchange stuff that changed.

The email i got my my ISP mentioned a new 10 training peroid similar to when you first get adsl on your line. Does this training period count if you havent been upgraded to adsl2+ and still remain on adsl1 on 21cn?

Asking as ive had a few disconnects since being swtiched over

You are on ADSL2+. The maximum upstream on ADSL is 832Mbps and you were probably on 448Mbps anyway.

Have you any previous stats? If you have, also check the downstream connection speed and attenuation.

Downstream before was 7616, so only slight improvement. Line attenuation was 32db

I thought with a attenuation of 32db (or 33db is it now) i could sync faster than that?

Ping has improved too by quite abit

You should be able to connect much faster than that. It is either your local wiring or it could be the way their training works (Sky for instance start at 4Mbps and over a period of some days increase it).

Time for him to ask them I think smile.

14Mbps or so. Which package are you on? How up-to-date is your router and its firmware? What is it?

Yea adsl24. tbh id settle for a stable line over a fast one anyway. 8mbit is plenty for my needs, and ive increased my upload speed and my ping which is good.

Im guessing they wont do anything until the 10 day training period anyway, so will wait till after that and take it from there. They did state in the email they sent me that i would have to request an upgrade to ads2+, hence i wasnt sure if i was on it or not

Its a Netgear DG834Gv5. Its not got the newest firmware update on it, its got the one before that

http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=41233

Says on there the router isnt great with adsl2+, even tho its advertised as adsl2+ compatible

That looks like your problem then I'm afraid.

There is a bit of confusion in that thread, even for when it was current. I thought the version number was on the label on the product, but not on the box.

Netgear 834v5 is Conexant, as is the 834Nv2.
834v1,2,3 and 834Gv1,2,3 are TI AR7. May be OK but not on Be LLU. But you aren't on that.
834v4, 834Gv4, 834GT and 834Nv1 are Broadcom. Fine.

Difference between 834 and all the rest is they have wireless and it doesn't.

Once you get a router that works properly the 10-day period would need re-running, to reset your Fault Threshold rate. All it does is set the Maximum Stable Rate and the FTR, and those are going to be incorrect due to the low sync. 10-day training.

No ISP should be concerned about the 10-day period when there is an obvious problem. The 10-day period is irrelevant in such a case. The user's difficulty is in getting that through to them.
