Exchange upgrade, do I have to do anything?

[link to this post]

Hi.

I daresay this is a common question but I cant find the answer.

My exchange was due to go 21CN on 31.10.12 but I've not noticed any difference.

So, do I have to do anything to get the upgrade working and how can I actually tell if the exchange has been upgraded at all?

I've done a speedchecker, the speeds look very stable but its no faster and I live less than a mile from the exchange.

Any ideas?

Thx in advance.

https://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html will show ADSL2+ for you if WBC is available from the exchange.

Most providers don't automatically move you. Who are you with?

You probably can get ADSL2+ from TalkTalk or Sky already.

Hi.

Yeah it just says ADSL2+ available, speeds up to 6mb.

I guess the exchange hasn't been upgraded as planned.

I'm with BT.

So do I have to keep checking that link and then inform Bt I want to switch over?

If the checker says ASDL2+ available then it can be ordered, and just a case of waiting for BT Retail to do a bulk migration of the lines they have in the area over.

What line speed do you have now? Presume around 5 Meg, the main gain will be upstream speeds probably doubling, you will probably only see marginal improvements for the downstream.

Only those connecting at over 6Meg now tend to see big improvements from ADSL2+.

?
If it says ADSL2+ is available, surely that means it has been upgraded? What makes you think the opposite?

You just need to ask for the upgrade. Though it probably won't help your speeds a lot. What connection speed do you get now? Or if you can't find that, (maybe called bandwidth by the Home ub), speed test speeds.

I'm confused now.

I've been here 5 years, always got between 5 and 6 mg, sometimes a little more, except at busy times and suffered with some drop off and about 300-400 upstream.

I've always been on the up to 8mg thing and I was anticipating moving to the up to 20mg thing.

Weirdly, since last weekend I'm speedtester at almost exactly 5.20meg every time. Never that stable before.

Maybe you have been upgraded. Do you know how to get the stats from your router? Like bandwidth, attenuation and noise margin?

It seems likely from the figures you've given so far that you are on a fairly long line. If you can find those stats we may be able to suggest ways to improve things, and we may be able to tell whether or not you've been upgraded.

The "up to 20Mbps" products only give a bit more than the "up to 8Mbps" ones on longish lines. Have a look at this graph.

But - like I just said, we can often help people gain a meg or so once we can see detailed figures for the line, and the more we improve things the higher up the graph you move, and then the more you gain from the faster product.

I'm afraid I don't know that router either. Plenty of people will be around later who do. smile.
