Zyxel Modem Stats

[link to this post]

Hi

I just fitted a Zyxel 3300N Modem to replace my OR Modem and HH3.

The IP profile has been 2MBPS for months on the old modem, although it has been higher in the past.

Now I have a modem where I can see stats, it looks like the line could be capable of faster rates (see below).

Is this the case and is is possible that the IP profile is stuck on 2MBPS.

Any advice gratefully received!!!

Jonathan

PS The stats have been about the same all day although the SNR has fallen slightly since nightfall.

Time to be brave and ring BT Broadband, chuck their kit back on and jump through all their support hoops. You are looking to a 'Boost' visit. Once they have checked it all out, the engineer will do an FTTC DLM reset to increase the sync rate. Firstly though, they need to establish why DLM capped the sync for starters and address this. Could be a set up issue, or a line fault.

Thanks.

Useful info.

I contacted them through online chat and went through a list of very basic checks before they referred me to a Specialist Network Fault Team, who will call back within 48 hours ... so the boost visit may be a few hoops away yet.

A first glance suggests that you are a long way from the cabinet.
Either attenuation is very high due to distance, or there could possibly be a HR fault and/or bridged tap issue.

High DS SNRM suggests that higher sync speed should be possible, but maybe the connection has previously experienced high error counts, applying interleaving at a high depth & thus lowering sync speed.

If that was the case & the errors were sufficient (at least for a sustained period), DLM will have capped sync speed at a level it considers 'suitable' to provide stability rather than speed.

The BTOR modems (Huawei & ECI) have both seen remotely installed firmware updates quite recently, which also adjusted band plan tones etc.

Reinstating the BTOR modem may just pick up the firmware update & 'force' a 'refresh', with a bit of luck establishing higher sync speeds.

AFAIK, any non-BTOR provided modems will not be able to take any advantage (or disadvantage) from the revised band plans.

FWIW, an unlocked Huawei HG612 modem will provide a lot more useful information, but will breach BTOR's Ts & Cs.

However, locked/unlocked HG612s can be obtained via that well known auction site at low cost for 'research' purposes.

For the time being, the original unlocking firmware needs to be installed & then allow the HG612 to pick up the updated firmware.

@ Zarjaz:-

Are you able to provide any background detail as to what these firmware updates are intended to do?

User 'theories' so far are that they MIGHT be related to vectoring and/or Profile 30a trials.

Come on Bald Eagle ! I am but a lowly pawn. smile

However, there are new VDSL frontplates being issued, which are, apparently a higher spec and meant to perform better on the 30a profile. Also have an inbuilt RFI filter in them. Look the same, but have MK2 in the top right hand corner on the front. So there is 'something' coming ...........

Many thanks for the excellent advice, everyone.

I'll do as you suggest and post how it goes.

I am blown away by the responsiveness and quality of info I got from my post and a similar one I put on on Kitz.

I am new to this and had no idea what a great community there is for this stuff.

Bald Eagle, I'll take a look on *-b*y for a used 612, as you suggest.

Pity my shiny new Zyxel is not going to be able to stay up to date with the new settings because I quite like it!!

Quick update:

BT have been out twice, once to unlock the IP profile and have a quick look, once for a deeper look.

It now works fine d/s... IP profile is fairly stable around 13.6 MBPS : for some reason it seems a little faster on the Zyxel than on the OR modem, regardless of time of day etc.

The d/s SNR now varies from about 5 (evening) to about 8 (daytime).

Upstream is still <0.5MBPS and refuses to play on band U1, which has a higher attenuation than U2.

I've got some logging software (dslstats) so if I can get the kids to stop turning it off, I'll be able to learn more.
