FTTC coming soon...how will I know?

[link to this post]

Just wondering if people noticed anything on their ADSL2+ lines once FTTx was enabled, such as lower pings, despite still being on non-FTTx?

I ask, because FTTC is planned at the end of the month, and my pings are 22ms to this site, which is a record. They generally tend to be 25ms+ and have been for years now. No matter how much I tweaked the line, 25ms+ was the norm, and once I saw 24ms, but that was in the middle of the night.

Does it suggest there's some extra capacity on the exchange (FTTC enabled)?

Potentially extra capacity or maybe a revised/new routing from your exchange back to London ... or it might be reconfiguration in the exchange.

Hmm.

A more stable speedtest too:

Odd ping report though. Pinging the speedtest server direct is still 22ms. Something has definitely improved.

Part of me wants to reboot the router to see what speeds pop up, and part of me wants to leave it well alone. wink

Do a reboot an hour or two after sunrise, so around 06:30. In te meantime run RouterStats to get your SNR and sync speeds for the rest of the day. Send me a link to the image.

I'm beginning to wonder if a similar thing happened to my exchange (Hoyland) this evening. My ADSL dropped out at roughly 17:30, then came back up and synced at a lot slower rate. I rebooted the router and it's back to normal speed, but with much better latency to most sites (13ms to this site).

Ok, let's have a sweeper:

1-3 : Fluke
10-1 - Take-up of FTTx is freeing up the non FTTx capacity.
100-1 : They rebooted the Internet
250-1 : Seb moved TBB 300 miles North, between Sheffield and Scotland.

ADSL2 connection shoudl have no change -- may be a little more stable as premises further out from exchnage purchase FTTC but not change / benifit to ADSL service - only chage will be when you pruchase an FTTC service otherwise not impact

the line checker wll offer you a Cooper service or an FTTC service once cab is live and orderable -

If you do not purchase an FTTC service you remain as you are

Camieabz

I have read somewhere, but can't remember or find where, that BT were moving the B-RAS abilty to routers closer to the customer, to enable caching and streaming locally, (could be to do with BT sport) this may have an effect on Pings. This may affect all connections using BT wholesale. If so it would not be directly related to FTTC rollout, so co-incidence, but could be driven by the higher level of streaming on FTTC so associated.

Something like this I presume
