Setting up spare wireless router with same IP

[link to this post]

Iím currently using a TP-Link router. The login page is http://192.168.1.1/

I adjusted a few settings on my Netgear via the usual Ethernet cable connection to my PP and, whilst in the mood, decided to set up a ZyXEL router Iíve never used. The default IP address of my ZyXEL is 192.168.1.1 Ė the same as the TP-Link in the line. It seems obvious now that keying 192.168.1.1 into my browser address bar would bring up the TP-Link login page rather than the ZyXEL equivalent.

Itís hard to believe that in a decade of working wirelessly for most of the time I have never set up a spare router with the same IP as the router in the line I donít think I have.

Any ideas as to how I can work around the issue without unplugging the router in the line?

switch off wireless on your laptop and connect to new router with cable
192.168.1.1 will then bring up new router

once connected you can change the default ip address of the router making it easier to connect next time

And make sure DHCP is turned OFF in te second device.

It is also worth restricting the DHCP range of the primary router to say ...64 to ...192 and making the IP address of the secondary outside that block.

I couldn't work out if this was to be a second router in use on the same network, or just a spare ready set up for if the main one fails.

If to be a second in use, as well as disabling its DHCP the given IP address needs to be outside the allocatable range of the main one.

Roberto,
The ZyXEL is a 2-year old but router that was still in its cellophane wrap. I just wanted to have ready it for any future troubleshooting exercise

That's good. That's how I understood your OP but couldn't be sure I was right.

You can probably ignore all the stuff about DHCP then. Just don't have the two routers connected together.
