Moved house, broadband slow ... switch to fibre?

[link to this post]

Hi there folks.

Sorry if I'm posting this question in the wrong place.

I'm a bit confused and would really appreciate some help.

I've just moved house, transferring my Sky broadband ADSL & phone. The broadband is really slow.

I think I'm on a 30 day rolling contract.

The village I now live in (Seer Green,Bucks) has fibre (BT & Virgin, I believe)

1 Would the house move have tied me in to staying, or can I just switch?
2 Is fibre going to be genuinely faster? If not, will I be able to cancel?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Aaron

A village I know quite well! ADSL is typically slow in te village - locations in Long Grove get around 1-4 Mbps as you are quite a way from Beaconsfield exchange. VDSL speeds are up in the 40 - 80 Mbps range as there are several cabinets by the shops and church with others dotted around too.

Have a look at the BT DSL checker: http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome Your number might work, if not try with the address option.

As for switching, most providers will move you up if you stay with them. You may find you cannot change provider easily without penalty though.

Virgin Media is NOT an option in Seer Green, what makes you think it is?

VDSL2/fibre via other providers is an option and should be superfast (i.e. over 24 Mbps) for all of the main part of Seer Green. Exact speeds depend on exactly where a property is in relation to the green street cabinet serving it.

Generally providers are happy to let you upgrade services even if in a minimum term

http://labs.thinkbroadband.com/local/broadband-map#1... shows the speed tests for Seer Green and the ADSL speeds look slow and plenty of nice fibre ones

Thanks for the quick reply ...

... after plugging my address into the ADSL Checker:

ADSL Max: up to 1.5 Mbps
ADSL 2+: up to 2 Mbps

VDSL (A): 42 / 32 Mbps (clean)
VDSL (B): 35 / 20 Mbps (impacted)

As regards Virgin fibre, you'll have to forgive me ... I really don't know about this stuff at all. I did a search on another broadband availability site, and it said I could get it.

So, much as I suggested, down around 2Mb for your ADSL connection and a lot better for VDSL/fibre. Even impacted is pretty good in comparison so provided Sky will offer you service, try them for a contract change for a 40Mbps service. If not, are you in time to cancel the existing without penalty?

Which cabinet are you on?

That's quite a posh area. Beats my old area which was Old Town near the Saracens Head smile

No reason why Sky shouldn't provide it. I know people who lived next door had Sky and then BT FTTC in the times we were there. Both at the Beaconsfield Exchange obviously

If I move home with Sky, will I need to take a new contract for my Sky products and services?

No, you won’t be entered into a new contract if you move with the same products and services. Your existing terms and conditions will apply. If you choose to take any additional products or services you may have new a minimum term attached.

Ring up Sky and ask them to upgrade you to Sky Fibre, easiest route to take, and speed should be decent.

No reason they cannot offer it given what I can see.

Might be even easier to order online - certainly did with my original ADSL to Sky Fibre connection
