Any info on my cabinet

[link to this post]

Hi I'm on cabinet 2 of Whitburn (NEWN) and the where and when checker still says build stage and should be complete within 5 months. I was told by Digital Durham that it would be ready for fibre orders at the end of 2016 but nothing seems to be happening, no sign of a fibre cabinet near the old cab 2. Any ideas?

The only information I can find is from the CodeLook website: "FTTC being Built, live due by November 2016". I'm sorry that I couldn't be more helpful.

Yea thats what Digital Durham said, thanks. No idea what the delay is. I have seen on roadworks.org duct clearance between the cabinet and the exchange but apart from that all gone quiet.

It's likely to be a lack of permission from the council to install the cabinet.

I saw on roadworks permission to put the electricity cabling in for it but so far no cabinet unless its no where near the old cabinet.

Fibre cabinets are installed within 200 m of the PCP. So, it's best to just have a good search around just to check.

200m is not the usual limit, or have they changed that too recently?

There is the roadworks set for end of January, so its a case of seeing if this goes ahead if so then they are still progressing.

No sign that the cabinet has been refused permission and especially as a gap funded one if it was refused some questions to be asked as to exactly why.

At a guess they're waiting to get the ducts sorted out, as it may be if this proves too difficult there is a slightly different fall back location.

Ok learn something new everyday and thus the people at Openreach briefing on a limit of 50 to 100m in the past are clearly wrong.

Which cabinets have their fibre twin more than 200m away?

Errrrmm.

The maximum cabling distance between the FTTC cabinet and its PCP is 100 metres. Giving a practicable ground-level maximum of 80 metres.

The Openreach preferred maximum distance is 50 metres. I don't know if that is cabling or ground-level.

Noticed the planned work that says "interim to permanent" by BT on the main road, thats where it said duct work before.

While this might be true, it doesn't make sense, that would mean everyone on that cabinet with fibre will have an extra ~200m (or more) of copper (if they are lucky) reducing their speeds even more, so the lines that might of been within the binderies of being offered fibre to then not being offered it.

Or am I completely missing something here?

If what is true? William's statement, which clearly is not, or MtSaffron's?

The distance from the cabinet for attenuation estimation has always been cabling premises to PCP plus cabling from PCP to FTTC cabinet. Note only one length between the cabinets, not the two that are used.

This is why Openreach want the two cabinets as close as possible. Fifty metres is the preferred maximum, not a target distance.

So the fibre may not be terminated. If there's problemaic ducts it could take a long time to clear them.

On the other hand, it could be ready in a couple of weeks.

Keep an eye out for the lock on the cabinet changing to a silver one. Once that silver lock is on, the cab will usuall be accepting orders within a few days.

I think the duct work has already been done a few weeks back as they were on roadworks.org re-instating the pavement where duct clearance had taken place. Also there is another cabinet which is further in the village which is already terminated. I would imagine any fibre would take the same route.

If it has been commissioned successfully then usually a few days but maybe longer. If it has not reached that stage then it's back to the waiting game. The commissioning stage is often when the high security lock is fitted , black or silver.

I don't want to depress you, I live in central London and we were told our cabinet would go live in sept 1012 in fact this did not happen until the beginning of December 2016. A whole raft of excuses were made about the power at the exchange, then at the cabinet etc. The most annoying thing is that the cabinet directly opposite my premises has had fibre since the original date, but because my line is connected to an older cabinet further down the road fibre was not available to me.

Ive been and had a look. There doesn't appear to be a high security lock on it, they have filled in the trench from the old cabinet about 26m away. All I can see on the cabinet is four locks with triangular keys by the looks and one bar in the middle that looks like it could contain a lock in the future but looks like the cab. isn't populated yet.

Short of breaking in I don't know if there is anything in there connected or not. They have covered the trench to the old cab so I would guess the interconnects between the two cabs are in place and roadworks.org said for power engineer to connect and clear site. Probably about the 3rd time this particular site has had the road/pavement up. Checked my number on Where and when site but still says build stage.

Wholesale. BTW are always the first.

When Openreach say it is open for orders they mean orders from their customers, the CPs. (Communications Providers, of which ISPs are a subset).

Then it's up to the CPs to make it available to their ISPs and thereby end users.

Still worth checking the Openreach one, which will raise your spirits earlier. At that point it's pretty certain it won't be long.

Another clue is if the forecast date disappears completely from the one I linked to. Usually 2-3 days after than it comes back with the initial estimates and "Available". At that point ISPs can order.

Ah. BDUK or similar. BT Wholesale knows nothing about it until Openreach declares it accepting orders. Then they have to get their act together to make sure they can release it to ISPs for ordering.

I wonder if there is a chance TT or Sky might start supplying on it first? By a few days, if at all.

I will be going with UNO if their checker lets me. Although seeing the amount of rejects recently not so sure, but the cab. is ready. Just needs the switch throwing and yes it is BDUK or gov. funded.

SOGEA if I remember correctly is being able to have line-only with no phone service. I don't think it's been rolled out yet, but haven't checked.

18/2 is a new'ish Openreach product for long lines I think, allowing a slightly lower price. You can check the OR prices if you google Openreach price list. Not available to you as you can get higher speeds.

Sim provide is providing a line-only at the same time as the FTTC, just like SIM provides on normal lines and ADSLx/FTTC. 18/2 FTTC is I believe available on normal lines like anything else.

?
Got 18/2? No way.

1) It isn't available to you,
2) Your estimates at as high as 80Mbps, so you will have ordered either 80/20 or 40/10 from uno.
3) I don't know if uno even sell it.
4) I'm not sure Openreach do yet - a quick check on their price list and "Trial and pre-launch" offers don't bring it up anywhere obvious.

That Wholesale Checker you linked to is now showing an open order on the line due to complete on the 27th, is this a new feature on the checker?
