Just been catching up on the old thread.

Massive congratulations to the guys who have finally got the long awaited email. Great that the ball is finally rolling. Are yous all from similar areas ? Looked like wales and the south west so perhaps they're prioritising the training to areas that need people first ?

Still the wait goes on for the rest of us. Out of curiousity what has been offered in terms of salary etc. Seen it was different to that originally advertised?

Cheers

Ben.

Someone else said they have had a start date! I haven't yet but she said they now have positions ready and a start date will be given shortly.
This is what I was told in the email still sounds good so I'm not to bothered as long as it is permanent

This job offer does differ from the role we explained to you last year. Openreach has changed the way we train all our new engineers and we now provide you with the opportunity to achieve an industry recognised qualification. We're delighted to be offering you a career that begins with a world class training programme as well as building extensive on the job experience. You'll get loads of support during this period and after the first year you’ll have achieved your professional qualification.

The starting salary is £20,000 for the first year while you’re training, and then you will move to £22,933 following successful completion of the programme and a 10% performance related bonus. There are a broad range of other engineering roles available in Openreach with salaries up to £25,772 which you can apply for after completion of your training. We’ll supply your company vehicle, tools and kit and you’ll also have great opportunities to gain promotions to a wide variety of roles.

I wish you guys who get the role all the best. Don't worry if you don't get the job straight away. Takes people years to learn how the whole puzzle works. But the best thing is there is a whole wealth of people around you who will have the answers and there only ever a phone call away.

It would have been the £22,993 as that's what new recruits are on, an NE2 or TM2 grade. And then it jumps up to about £25k when the recruits are skilled to do underground faulting a bit later in their career. All with a 10% on target bonus.

I had the email too, I'm from Ayrshire, Scotland so it's not just the Welsh recruits, maybe more to do with dates of the actual assessments? Im sure they will be working towards informing everyone!

The -£3k that was advertised is a bit of a downer to be honest, I'm taking a bit of a pay cut as it is but I'm doing it to spend more time with my family as I work away mostly so being at home is more important so hopefully it's short term pain for long term gain smile

Just remember no costs for fuel as you park your van at home. An attractive pension. Free broadband worth at least £100 a year. And also discounts on stuff like cars and also apple stuff. Cinema discounts probably most useful. And if you get asked to work in another part of the country for a couple of weeks I think you get paid an extra £500 a week but don't quote me. Lots of perks

Yeah it's a bit of a bummer the pay drop for 12 months like. My basic is currently 23k and I then get a £1600pa shift allowance for working 17 Sundays across the year. I was already forefeiting the allowance but with the view I'm saving £40pw in petrol commuting at the moment so it would have balanced. Then the added 10% bonus which would actually make me better off.

The reason for the change was to spend more time at home with the newborn but will have to crunch some numbers now to see if it's viable. 12 months pain isn't much I suppose for a long term gain ......

Also selfishly the changes may sift a few people out of the way and training can hopefully start sooner for us who are still waiting for news .

Has anyone been given any concrete info about the training ? I.e. 5 weeks, 1 at yarnfield the rest local etc ?

I thought that once they started doing underground they get moved onto standard BT B2 grade (like most Openreach engineers are on), in which case the bonus goes and it's just the standard B2 salary?

I took a HUGE drop in salary initially (coming in as an apprentice), ask yourself if you think it's worth it to work for one of the biggest companies in the UK, and all that goes with it. Remember, Openreach isn't a company (at the moment), so you'll be an employee of BT Group and that presents you with many opportunities.

Once multi skilled it's a transfer to the B2 salary that doesn't entail a 10% OTB.

The pay down may seem a lot to most but most of the apprentices who join are on a lot less and they get a NVQ out of it, from experience it is worth it in the short term for the massive career opportunities after, whether that be progressing as an experienced engineer for both copper and fibre or progressing up the ladder as a coach or management.

There is a massive internal change of the structure of new recruits and the journey will be much better than previous.

None of the NE2 engineers ever move onto the B2 salary. That's the whole point of work force 2020. But when you add on the 10% bonus to their £25k for doing UG on NE2 it all works out the same. I joined as an apprentice luckily so on a B2

Very wrong, a few team members from a team I've managed had the UG upskill and have transfered over to the B2. Also newer apprentices are also on completion of their NVQ and 36 month apprenticeship go over to the Workforce 2020 contract. The last engineers to assimilate onto the B2 contract assimilated in Sept 2015 or March last year I can't quite remember the exact tranche.

Im taking an 8k paycut. But i work a 52 hour week average. (50/55) with every other Saturday morning and hate it getting home at 6:30 every night.. The hourly rate works at 5p less. I think the paycut and 12month probation is to filter out those who dont give 100% in the first year. Ive taken the chance and accepted as to me happiness in a job is just as if not more, important for the long run to me. Its not bad money to start. Works out at 10.25 an hour if its a 37.5 hour week, then at 22933 it goes up to £11.70. I cant wait to start! Good luck all!

My portal still says pending feedback. I'm taking a paycut aswell but I think if we all get our heads down and get stuck into your work. Do some overtime and make the most of our training year we will all benifit in the long run. I like a lot on here have waited a long time for this opportunity so to knock it away because of Money Is a shame. That's why the big recruitment is going on to help with spikes in work load so engineers are less likely going to be required to go on lodge or for them to call contractual overtime. Also rules have changed you need to provide receipts for accommodation but if a load of engineers are willing to stay in the same accommodation then money can be made but I wouldn't say anywhere near £500 a week! They are probably on about engineers who work away on lodge working Sat/Sun overtime and overtime in the evenings during the lodge. Can't see there being much lodge when recruitment is complete...

Now days the you get the cost of the accommcdation and few £ on top i think about £10. Any money you make on top is due to working lots of OT . Not a thing i go for but have mates who do it and they tell me 100% the only real money they make is due to doing lots of OT ie 5+ hrs a day.

A local lad who is an engineer confirmed what they said in the assessment centre.

£60 per day for accommodation regardless of what you pay. He stated for 2 weeks away and slept in a caravan park in a tent for £5 per night. For the two weeks he had 920 minus his pitch of 70. 850 profit just for accommodation for two weeks. Happened beginning of January.

In reply to a post by MAT723:
Im taking an 8k paycut. But i work a 52 hour week average. (50/55) with every other Saturday morning and hate it getting home at 6:30 every night.. The hourly rate works at 5p less. I think the paycut and 12month probation is to filter out those who dont give 100% in the first year. Ive taken the chance and accepted as to me happiness in a job is just as if not more, important for the long run to me. Its not bad money to start. Works out at 10.25 an hour if its a 37.5 hour week, then at 22933 it goes up to £11.70. I cant wait to start! Good luck all!

Oh make a great point about happiness too. I'm the happiest I've ever been in a job. I'm treated with respect by my manager, left alone to get on with things and since the changes a few months ago I'm not monitored as much. I love the job, but I hope to move on eventually within the company but that's purely for a monetary reason.

People have been mentioning overtime. I would still argue things are great on that front. I can work every Sunday if I want, and it pays well. You can't help but do evening overtime either. Anything over an hour past your finish time and the whole lot is converted to overtime. Or if your flex balance is at 6 hours anything extra at end of day is automatically overtime, even 25 minutes.

Hopefully all you lads waiting on an email get one today! I reckon they will be doing it not on location but on dates of assessment days?

I just had a phone call from recruitment there with a verbal job offer, they are working early today!

Got given my job location and then agreed a start date and told that the contract will follow in an email.

After all the waiting it seems to be moving quite fast now!

Haha thank god for that ! Thought I might have been lost in the wormhole.

God today has been bad enough waiting to hear never mind having to wait potentially another 3 full days !!

I had a good chat with the Mrs about the salary after reading people's thoughts on here and I think we would be daft not to take it. Also spoke to a lad I know who's an Area Manager for OR and he backed up the ways to get a salary increase and overtime availability.

Definitely some well deserved beers coming up !! Amazed we haven't been reduced to alcoholics !

I don't envy you in the slightest then haha ! My Mrs gave birth the week before our assessment so we're all sorted now thank god ! Just gutted I'm going to be away for a few weeks during training already missing little things now being away 12 hours let alone 5 full days . Will be worth it in the long run I suppose. I work 60 hours a week now but only contracted to 45 and don't get paid a penny in overtime. Looking at losing about £5K in the first year but hopefully be able to make a bit back by doing an extra hour or two a day once allowed. Just keep looking at the bigger picture after the first year. Atleast you'll be settled into the job etc by the time the Mrs drops !

I had the call today too.

From Merthyr in South Wales. 2nd November assessment

Pretty sure she said 27th April but must have meant 24th like Swansea jack.

First week in yarnfield remainder in Southampton.

Is the resididential all expenses paid?

Do they provide you with everything or get it yourself and they reimburse it through your pay?

5 weeks is a lot of money to spend on food and drink.

When they phoned you had a choice (well I did as I think I was one of the 1st) between 3rd of April and the 24th of April, obviously after the long wait most people took the 3rd. My girlfriend is due on the 12th of April though so I couldn't take either and asked for later so I'm in on the 8th of may! The girl had to get permission for this as she was under instruction to fill April 1st.

Damn it ! I get they are doing it by area but the dates are now getting later and later as they fill up the courses. I have a weeks holiday booked at the beginning of June so that's going to make it even later at this rate as that can't be changed. Just want a call now the longer I stay in my current job the more likely I'll hit annual pay review and if that goes up by a decent amount then that's another spanner in the works

Still nothing, my date will be almost Xmas the way the dates are filling up. If it's later than May I won't be accepting it, I'm bored of waiting now! Been offered a permanenct position at my current employer than I need to respond to by the end of tomorrow. If I don't have a call by then my decision will have been made for me.

It wouldn't surprise me ! The wait I can cope with, after all we've waited since November. It's the fact that the last contact was in January and we were told we would have an update by the end of Feb. A simple email saying we're working through each area now etc would be nice. If it wasn't for this forum I would probably be even more annoyed because it would just look like nothing's happening.

There doesn't have to be only one Paula. There doesn't even need to be any "Paula" in this process.

I have worked for a company that advertised with a named person to send CV's to or request application forms from. There was no such person. As I found out after I joined.

Since when I have encountered other companies with the same policy. From the company's point of view it has a lot to recommend it.

Having said that, there won't be many in this case, but I'd be very surprised if there are more than three or four people coordinating the offer planning and coordination.

Kindness isn't going to cure the world of all its awfulness but it's a good place to begin. Daisy Ridley.

Had mine today, you have to follow the links online to accept the contract on one e-mail. Another e-mail has a list of tasks (DVLA, disclosure scotland, health and bank forms etc) Then I had another e-mail asking for clothes sizes, bank details photo etc. Quite alot to do and some of them have to be sent back within 24 hours.

Maybe Openreach didn't realise there were only 28 days in February, when they promised you'd all hear by the end of it laugh. Today would be the 31st.

Good to see so many people suddenly given a great start to the weekend. Let's hope the others hear very soon smile.

Crossing fingers for the remaining lads for Monday to be honest I have had the e-mail but it's more of a notification of the change in pay than an offer and says I should get a start date for the next couple of months. So don't feel that far ahead of you or the original e-mail notifying of passing the assessment.
It is likely they are filling up the courses with the larger groups of appplicants from specific areas then filling up the gaps from declines and drop outs with the smaller groups!
There may be logic there somewhere!

I did email her, and that was the response I got!

I know we have to be careful what we say on here etc. but this process is awful

Please take my advice, you've just included your first name in a post further down. The company is very strict about this sort of thing. People get sacked straight away for putting anything online. You don't even work for them yet!

Because you've put your first name in the post and an extract from the email whoever has responded to you (if they're reading this post) now knows exactly who you are and you've just slagged off the process!

If they're having a bad day they might just think "if he doesn't like it he can forget the job" and put a line through your name. You may think I'm being dramatic but I'm really not, I'm just trying to help.

If you take a look at the BT apprenticeship website (eg this page for Openreach engineers, or this page for Wholesale work), you can see that they have 3 different programmes: Advanced, Higher and Degree.

These have entry criteria as:
For our advanced programme you will need to have achieved or are predicted 4 GCSEs at grade C or above including English Language and Maths.

For our higher programme you will need to achieve (or have achieved) 2 A-Level qualifications with a minimum of CC grade by September 2017 (or equivalent qualifications). In addition you will need to have a minimum of 4 GCSE's at grade C or above including English Language and Maths.

For our full degree programme you will need to achieve (or have achieved) 3 A-Level qualifications with a minimum of BCC grade by September 2017 (or equivalent qualifications). In addition you will need to have a minimum of 4 GCSE's at grade C or above including English Language and Maths.

The "What is an apprenticeship" page then tells you:
ADVANCED

You'll work towards a Level 2 or 3 NVQ through work-based learning whilst also achieving functional skills, which are supported by a knowledge based qualification such as a BTEC.

HIGHER

You'll work towards Level 4 through work-based learning which is consolidated by the achievement of a foundation degree.

FULL DEGREE

You'll work towards our work-based learning degree qualification.

It looks like BT have set up a very structured apprenticeship scheme ... and it wouldn't surprise me if you slotted into that structure in some way.

Why aren't you applying for one of these?

Was offered the 8th May start Date but because I have a holiday booked for a week in June I've had to take the later date of July 3rd as your not allowed to miss the first 8 weeks.

First week at Yarnfield then the remainder in Thornaby.

Hope you all get the call this afternoon. The lass sounded rushed off her feet to be fair.

I have been given a date of 22nd, May.

Anyone know where this training is.

For those who have not heard they seem to be working to some sort of plan by area.

Got notification of position available Friday, phone call today so I'm hoping you will have an e-mail by the weekend Some people have had June start dates offered already. She also confirmed the selection was area based which would also fit as to where the training was as I'm the first I believe, to have been offered Peterborough and the only one from East Anglia on here (that's owned up to it)

Plymouth mate.

Ref training, I didn't ask to be honest, I only had an email and was just grateful for a ruddy start date! I'm guessing it will be a week in Yarnfield and then the rest in Southampton for me - I only say Southampton because some of the Welsh guys have mentioned that is where they are going so makes sense.

Surely you should have heard by now!
Got an e-mail from HR today clarifying the training length which instead of 1 week Yarnfield 4 weeks designated training centre 3 weeks Budfying it's now been extended to 1 week Yarnfield 7 weeks designated training centre 4 weeks Buddying in you local area. So training is now 12 weeks instead of 8 with 8 weeks away instead of 5.

So I've been following this thread from work when it's been quiet (which isn't often!) and have had my application with Openreach for about a year now. Finally I get an email today from Laura asking me to apply in my local area and complete the initial details, then the situation assessment (PASS!) and now it's a video interview??!! Whatever happened to meeting suitable candidates face to face?

Does anyone have any guidance on the video interview they can help me with?

Bit disappointed with the starting wage. I'm making more than that as a call centre monkey at the moment!

We or at least I never did a video interview maybe its a new process? I imagine after the video interview you go to the assessment day.

I had a phone interview then assesment day and an offer. I think the new wage is too weed out people who are really interested by the sounds of it they have had problems with people starting doing the training getting paid for it and then quitting, also depends where you are in the country for a complete entry level job that has quite a few opportunities I think its a fair wage for the first year!

Lots of the questions I had on the phone interview were things like how much do you weigh etc lol also a few customer service scenarios.

This would have been in the pipeline for quite some time, I think the change to role/wage and the length of time it has taken to start dishing out the roles is all part of the new setup of OR. Too much of a coincidence for it all to happen at the same time.

It won't have any affect on new starters, I work for EE which is part of the BT group but operates as its own company, like plusnet and BTFS.

My mate has also just passed the situational tests and has his video interview next week, all I know is that its not with a live person, and I presume it will just replace the original telephone interview.
