Trying to order FTTC.....

I'm moving into a new property which is in a non cabled area so it's BT only.

There is a BT openreach NTE5 with a landline number written on it but the line is dead and the BT postcode checker has no mention of FTTC at all, just ADSL - yet Sky and PlusNet say on their checker FTTC is available.

I'm looking at ordering with Uno because I don't particularly want a 12 month contract - so how do I get them to place an FTTC order if BT say no.

I'm pretty sure I know which cab feeds my home and it's definitely got FTTC.

Checker says FTTC is available, 40-60Mb range by the looks.

The building has multiple lines running into it. How will they know / how do I tell them what line to activate?

You don't say anything about the line. You just order by full postal address, not just the building address. The circuit ID I believe is stored in the records and can be reactivated by software.

AIUI, if necessary an engineer with access to the property can put a signal on the line from the master socket and find it at the cabinet, but I don't think that will be needed.

Thereís any number of combinations of how a line install might get done, and itís not really worth fretting over which path will be used ... pick your voice provider, give them your full address, order, and theyíll take it from there.

I had the same problem moving in here. The address was listed as a bronze address (ie unserviced by BT, but in the PAF), even though there were BT sockets. I guess VM had been in use for a while.

With Plusnet, the order went through in a not-quite-confirmed fashion. The first result was a survey, which caused data to be put into the checker 2 days later, including the FTTC estimates. Then Plusnet could set the rest of the order up.

Unfortunately, the survey got the cab identity wrong, so things fell apart when the engineers turned up ... but that's a whole different story.

I did a bit of investigating and found the BT line had been snipped in the roof.

Trying to order BT Broadband, they were adamant the line could be re-enabled and an engineer visit was not needed, although the line had been cut.

Unfortunately TalkTalk kept saying fiber was not available so I managed to place an order for a new line with PlusNet, on a 40/2 service.

Will the BT OR engineer run a new line and fit a VDSL faceplate as standard or will they just splice / join the old disconnected line?

The pole is the other side of a busy main road.......

If the current cable is ok and there is enough slack then I would guess they would just splice in - can't see them running a new cable unless they need to. And if they do need to then I would guess it will not be just a single guy as I can't believe they could run cable over a main road without either specialist equipment or closing the road (I would assume the latter).

There are 8 overhead lines coming into the building, 2 I know are dead so hopefully they can use one of those.

Will the OR engineer fit a filtered VDSL NTE?

If activating the phone line they'll do just that, managed installs of VDSL2 cost more

The location of the current NTE is in an unsuitable place, thereís no mains and itís in the middle of the building, probably why the builders cut the wires thinking itís never been used.

The cable internally has been cut twice from what I can see so I was hoping BT could run the drop wire to where I want the modem, which is in close proximity to where the drop wire is secured to the building from the pole across the road.

If a short run from OH feed to where you want the NTE, and thatís easier than providing it to the original location, then yep I expect itíll get done .... IF you get visited for the install.

I've been given an Openreach engineer time slot. If they don't turn up i'll be absolutely furious because I've booked time off work and it'll mean we'll be unserviceable, as the cable has been cut short and left in the loft.

The whole reason for going with PlusNet was because they gave us an option of an engineer visit, which I've paid for, unlike BT and Sky who wanted to re-enable the existing line.

No use when it's been butchered.

Most likely they'll cut at the eaves and run a new lead in from there ..... so you'll get the NTE where you want it I expect.

If it's a contractor, don't take any BS and make sure they do a decent job.

There is a highly convoluted, but but essentially safe technique which involves leaving a rope laying across the road running to two pulleys on either end, you then (when clear haul this up, drag over the dropwire which you have connected to one end).
It is difficult to explain, but it does work .... and you still need a second safety bod.

In reality, mob handed or with a hoist is how most get done.

Well, the line is now in. BT engineer had a few issues getting a dial tone yesterday, think all 8 lines come into the building in the same place, so he just ran a wire into where I wanted it from the existing dead line.

He's shown me the line stats and it's connecting at 40/2 on his handheld tester, the line is 500m long with a max attainable of 52/12.

There is a but though.....

The PlusNet hub won't connect and I've just had a text off PlusNet saying there has been a problem with my install.

Will the BT engineer closing his job start the wheels in motion or do I need to ring PlusNet and say the line is in?

PlusNet provisioning will only activate account once they've had the yes from providers i.e. close job, and then its down to TR-069 which can take 15 minutes for it to remotely configure the Hub One.

So usually its plug it all and go away for a long tea break.

Just had a text off PlusNet saying my new phone service has been activated.

Nothing about the internet yet.
